It’s a rare thing when it happens these days, especially in a world where trivia has gone virtual and perfect scores are not uncommon (cough) – but WE GOT FIRST PLACE IN A GAME AND WON A TIEBREAKER!
It was a fairly rough set of questions, too! A substitute host threw in a question that we thought was bullshit – asking about what specific thing that she and the regular host share in common. Wait, WHAT? Am I supposed to stalk the profiles of Sporcle hosts now to glean information about their personal lives in case they ask about themselves during a game? Isn’t that kind of creepy? Needless to say, we missed that question – though an all Batman related mystery round was very, very favorable to us!
We also had no idea “that” word was a trademark. Did “The Muppet Show” producers know this? Did someone serve them an invoice?
Round One –
1 U.S. States Which U.S. state that borders Kentucky is also one of the original 13 colonies? That border is a mere Brazilian style strip, but it still counts!
2 Tennis What American has the second-most women’s Grand Slam tennis tournament singles titles, with 23?
NERD POINT: Who has the most?
Got one of the correct players, not both.
3 Dealer’s Choice – (normally the regular trivia host picks a favorite question category of one of his regular teams for this question) Other than hosting trivia games, what do Epic and Deana have in common?
A) We once dressed up as our favorite wrestler
B) We went to the same college
C) We grew up in the same town
D) Potatoes are our favorite food group
We went with option “D,” miss.
4. This was an audio question about a stupid song mentioning a Nieman Marcus shopping spree-uh…
Mystery One –
I’m Batman
Name the actor based on the films they appeared in that were released immediately before and after they played Batman for the first time.
M1. The Dream Team and Pacific Heights
M2. One Fine Day and The Peacemaker
M3. The Machinist and The New World
M4. The Relentless Four and The Girl Who Knew Too Much
Got all of these, though #4 was a reasoned guess – our reasoning being that the movies sounded “old.”
Round Two –
5 Literary Characters Peeta Mellark, Haymitch Abernathy, and Maysilee Donner are three of the residents of District 12 in what series of novels?
6 Trademarks A generic trademark is a brand name or trademark that has become so widely used for its type of product that the trademark has lost all legal protection. Which of the following is NOT a generic trademark in the U.S.?
A) Aspirin
B) Dumpster
C) Trampoline
D) Scooter
Miss.
7 Insects Brush-footed, skipper, and metalmark are common names of large families of what kind of flying insect? FB host clue.
8 Adaptations What CBS sitcom, which debuted in 2021 and is adapted from a British series of the same name, centers on a couple who have inherited a country mansion from a distant relative named Sophie Woodstone? Mike watched this for a while, but he said it became boring.
Mystery Two – Visual
We were tied for first with 44 points going into the final with the Philly based team “Bark and Stormy,” who usually wipe up the floor with us. Shocker!
Final Category – Cookies and Science
Place the following Girl Scout Cookie varieties in order according to where the colors of their boxes fall on the visible spectrum, beginning with the shortest wavelength.
Thin Mints
Trefoils
Lemonades
We got this, and so did our partners in crime. So…tiebreaker time!
in millions how many Girl Scout cookies are sold annually?
I don’t know if they meant boxes of cookies – or wanted the number of actual cookies sold annually. How would you do the math for that? Crazy…we didn’t have much time to debate this, we were off to the cranial “races,” to come up with an answer, as it were…
These are always tricky, and involve pulling a random number from your brain. Thankfully the number we picked $200 million) was closer to the correct number (165 million) than our competitors’ choice, which was too high.
No prizes or anything, but bragging rights for a second – and seeing our competitors virtually clap for us when we won? Good sportsmanship! It’s those little warm ‘n fuzzy moments in trivia games that make me smile!
As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Blu Cantrell (she was the singer in the audio clue).
round one
virginia, serena williams/margaret court, c (grew up in same town), blu cantrell/hit ’em up style (oops)
round two
hunger games, scooter, butterfly, ghosts
mystery one – m keaton, g clooney, c bale, a west
mystery two – cooper, spooner, crocs, eros
final – trefoil, mint, lemonade
tiebreaker -200 million
