I commented on a Facebook post about the tourist city of Frankenmuth, MI this morning.
It was just asking what people liked best about the city.

So what were some of the popular favorite things other people mentioned about Frankenmuth? World-famous all- you-care-to-eat chicken dinners? The open almost all year round Christmas store Bronners? The Cheese Haus? The giant pretzels? The glockenspiel at the Bavarian Inn? Or maybe just the overall Bavarian themed touristy vibe, especially during the Canadian and American holidays?
Wait…do Canadians still even visit our country anymore π€ I digress! π
Those were all popular answers.
I grew up near this tourist haven, and O got to visit the town…pretty much whenever I wanted to, so it didn’t seem that special to me as a kid. We occasionally went there for family dinners, I went on countless field trips there, we had my annual junior high bowling banquets there.
Grandma took each of us grandkids here for our birthdays. Who could forget the slabs of sherbet they provided for dessert? Or Grandma re-sharing the story about teaching my uncle how to drive? π
I went with friends to sled there in high school. We went to the Bavarian decorated McDonald’s afterwards.
But…back to the subject of school field trips…
When me and my second grade class went to Frankenmuth in January, 1980, we got to see something… historic.
I probably looked like this:

You can read about that historic event here:
My husband thought I was crazy when I recalled the story. But it actually happened – and I was totally there!
So when I made my comment on the post about my favorite thing about Frankenmuth, here’s the abridged version of what I said:
“The covered bridge.”

Not only did I get to see this bridge being dragged by oxen across a frozen river, but it was also a courtship spot for my future husband and I in the early 1990s!
It was just something cool that I could show him that he’d never seen before.
I always like to see this bridge every time I visit Frankenmuth! Fried chicken π really isn’t that important to me π
