Trivia Recap – October 15, 2024 – McShane’s Pub – My Trivia Live Game – (Ypsilanti, MI)

Answers are in the comments, see the second comment for a correction…

My trivia team has been sailing the pub trivia “seas” in a pretty willy-nilly fashion fashion over the past year or so. Not unlike drunken pirates trying to find treasure – and a decent port for us to enjoy some rum and whores (just kidding about the whores)! Or AM I😉

Speaking of pirate stuff, here’s a wacky image of a hybrid pirate ship that my husband made with the aid of an AI generator:

We’ve played at a few trivia spots near – and not so near to us, but for a variety of reasons, haven’t found a place that we feel like is “the one.”

Until further notice, McShane’s Pub and its My Trivia Live scene seems to be a temporary spot that may work out for our team. At least until it doesn’t! We have been commitment phobic, and I’ve been too busy with work and personal stuff to be able to play on the same day each week.

But if my team likes McShane’s, and we have a reasonable chance at success with winning prizes there?

We paid our third visit to McShane’s Tuesday night scene recently. There are a few really good trivia teams playing regularly here Tuesdays, and also on Thursday nights, which makes it competitive enough to interest us. We failed to win prizes on our first two tries on Tuesdays at McShane’s, but lo and behold, we won a prize on our third attempt! Sure, it was just a third place/$10 prize, but our standards are low!

We had four players – which is what remains of our core trivia team at this recent game, including three MTL veterans (me, my husband Mike and our eccentric buddy Brad) and one relative MTL newcomer Dave (he didn’t take too long re-learning the ropes). He has not played too many MTL games with us, though he has played countless Sporcle trivia games with us over the past 12ish years.

Here were our very abbreviated questions:

Round One

The Bible – Jesus turned water into what?

Languages – What is the most spoken language in South America?

Sports – What sport is played on ice with brooms and stones?

Round Two

US Presidents- Which US president’s father served in the Georgia House of Representatives in 1953?

Disney – Which of the Seven Dwarfs was the only clean shaven one?

Decades – In what decade was the Emancipation Proclamation issued?

Round Three

Bridges – Which bridge was opened in 1937 and features six lanes of Highway 101?

Academy Awards – Which 2017 film was mistakenly announced as the winner of best picture? My husband is not normally the “Oscars” expert on our team, but he was all over it (thanks sweetie)!

Businessmen – Which college did Bill Gates drop out of to start Microsoft?

Halftime – Vegetables

Identify four of the five US states producing the most corn per bushel in 2023 according to the World Population Review.

I was wearing a T shirt with one of the correct state’s name on it and pushed for us to put it down. Was it correct? Yes! Did we put it down? Nope! Honestly I didn’t know it for sure, I just think it was funny that I was wearing my Minnesota Roller Girls T shirt (bought for me as a gift years ago) and Minnesota turned out to be correct! It’s notable that we used the team name “Minnesota Nice” on a recent trivia night. Moral of the story? Never rule out Minnesota! Also everything is bigger in Texas (especially the hair and the hats).

We got three of these correct.

This was our only flub of the first half, but it would put us in a six-way tie for second with 33 points, behind Spacecats, who had 36 points.

In keeping with the pirate references I made earlier, arrr rougher seas ahead, mateys!

Round Four

Europe – Besides England, Wales and Scotland, what fourth region makes up the United Kingdom? Host Stacy said to be “very specific.”

Spinoffs – Knots Landing was a spinoff of what other nighttime soap? Good guess for us. Brad tried to push for Dynasty, but since I was a Dynasty gal in the 80s, I knew that “The Colbys” was the Dynasty spinoff. Will we ever get a trivia question about that spinoff series? I seem to remember some catty jab in that series about a bride wearing white when she probably… shouldn’t wear white, but maybe wear persimmon instead (ooh sick 80s burn)! Meh, Alexis on Dynasty was the queen of catty sick 80s burns!

Human Body – What is the hardest substance in the human body? “No Brad, it’s not your (blank)!”

Now for some rougher seas with krakens and sea serpents and the bloody British Navy port to starboard, yarr! More pirate lingo (I’m done with it, I promise)!

Round Five

Business Lingo – After the 1929 US stock market crash, legislation was passed to prevent a repeat which involved requiring businesses to provide an income statement, a balance sheet and what third thing? Miss.

Lakes – What US state has more lakes than any other state? No teams got this correct. We used our “word of the day” to avoid having to answer this. Which we’d regret having done when we were forced to answer the next one (seriously every damn time)!

Dining – What dining franchise was founded by Atari founder Nolan Bushnell? Brad mentioned what would have been correct, but nope, game over (see what I did there?)

Round Six

Populations – What is the most populated country in the world?

Coins – What US coin has 150 ridges? Miss.

Fictional Characters – What fictional ladies man liked his martinis “Shaken, not stirred?”

We were tied with three other teams for third with 61 points going into the final, behind We Were Never Here in second with 63 points and Spacecats in first with 68 points.

We used the moniker Arkham Asylum Glee Club for this game.

Final Category – I Want Candy

Deriving its name from a London club, what confection was created in 1935 after a worker suggested to a pastry chef that he make a snack that he could take to work in a “pack up?”

Got this. Here’s a semi relevant photo, which may be a hint (you’re welcome):

Our team’s strategist decided to wager all but two points on this. He said he had a reason (sometimes his weird wagers save our asses). Had we wagered it all, we would have been in a tiebreaker for second, which I would have enjoyed tremendously (tiebreakers are fun)! But…third place? OK! Nobody on our team was too upset about this turn of events (just getting a final question right is an accomplishment for us)!

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Sally Bowles!
