Since Sporcle Live’s Cash Rewards season is on hiatus for the holidays, we decided to use some of our back stock of gift certificates from Powell’s Pub and play some My Trivia Live. It was good to see a large group of teams playing while we’ve been away. Hopefully we didn’t scare them away. We’ll be back at MAIZ Mexican Cantina next week to begin the 2nd half of the season playing Sporcle Trivia Nights With Rachel Sue.
1)What is the name of the restaurant that host the annual hot dog eating contest each 4th of July on Coney Island? Nathan’s
2)What fruit is also the first name of Gwyneth Paltrow’s oldest child? Apple
3)Who took over for Regis Philbin as permanent co-host on the TV show “Live with Kelly”? No clue.
4)What are the seed bearing parts of pine, cedar and fir trees known as?
-Oddly enough, there was no mention of a “social” during these first four questions. Cones
5)Which US Olympian has won the most gold medals? I’m guessing Michael Phelps, because I think we had this same question recently.
6)In what Shakespeare play will you find the characters Puck and Theseus?
Bonus – What Shakespearian title character ordered the murder of his two nephews?
-The bonus question was our first miss of the night. Shakespeare is not one of our top categories.
Midsummer Night’s Dream for the first one. My guess for the second one is King Lear but it’s really…just a guess!
7)In what country would you find the Parthenon?
– Even the host couldn’t believe this question. He finished the question with “… Really?!?”.
8)What is the name of the motel in the 1960 film “Psycho”?
-Trivia 101 here, not quite a “Betsy Ross” question, but pretty close.
9)John Flansburgh and John Linnell in in what grammy winning alternative rock group, that is sometimes abbreviated as TMBG?
They Might Be Giants
Halftime – State Quarters YIKES!
Name the state with the following image on the back of their state quarter:
a) the Charter Oak No clue
b) an America’s Cup yacht Massachusetts?
c) a thoroughbred horse behind a fence Kentucky
d) a pelican and a trumpet Louisiana
Four for four on the halftime category, ending the first half down by the 3-point bonus question, behind one of the regular Powell’s teams playing a perfect game.
10)Newsletter – In what century was the original Star Trek series set: 22nd, 23rd, 24th or 25th?
11)Who was the 1st American team to win the Stanley Cup?
– Our 2nd miss of the night. However, this is a poorly worded question. It should have been “the first American NHL team”, since a team from Seattle won the cup in 1917… not that we answered with that team.
12)During the Civil War, in what state did the “March to the Sea” take place?
-With all of the questions like this, you would assume the scores would have been closer. But as those that play MTL regularly know, it all comes down to the final question anyway.
13)What search engine was originally named “Backrub”?
– We’ve been playing so long that this question has cycled around again at least once in both Sporcle and MTL.
Ask Jeeves? No idea.
14)What singer started in a rock group called First Edition, but later went on to be a country star?
Garth Brooks? No clue.
15)Who was the first US president to win the Nobel Peace Prize? Teddy Roosevelt
Bonus – What year did he win it?
-Missed it by one.
My guess on the year would be 1908. No idea.
16)On the Simpsons, what is the name of the sax player that Lisa idolizes?
– Wow, way to bust out a question about a character that hasn’t been mentioned on the show for 20 years.
Bleeding Gums Murphy.
17)Of the four states that border Mexico, which has the shortest border with Mexico?
– Ouch! One of our players had the right answer, but he was over-ruled by the other two.
I’m going to guess New Mexico. Whatever the answer, I’m going to try remembering it (it smells like a question that has burned us before).
18)Who directed the 1990 film “Goodfellas”?
Going into the final, we had a one point lead over the team in 2nd.
Final – Landmarks
What landmark are you taking a picture of, if Mt. Lee is in the photo?
No worries on that final, so we end the night where we started: sitting on another $30 certificate.
