Some of you trivia players out there may already know that we have a “fight song” for our trivia team. And some of you may have heard us singing it – or have helped us sing it before (lip synching is totally OK, we will not strip you of your Grammy Award for doing it, lol). After Monday’s Sporcle Live ’80s movies trivia night, I started singing a slightly…different song than our ‘Pods fight song, and was quickly joined by David S. – the lyrics go like this…”She’s probably somebody’s only light…Gonna shine tonight…Yeah, she’s probably somebody’s baby, all right.” If you haven’t spotted those song lyrics already, they are the lyrics to Jackson Browne’s hit single Somebody’s Baby, which is kind of the “unofficial” theme song of Fast Times At Ridgemont High. It peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1982. We used the team name “Fast Times at Miskatonic High,” so it seemed like a worthy “victory song!”

Most OCD photo… ever (all subjects are arranged in order of height)? I MUST have been in a good mood to agree to pose for this!

Kim and I chillin’ after the game…you can also kind of see Mike, Matt and David
Interestingly enough, there were NO questions asked about Fast Times at Ridgemont High, despite our team name inspired by the film! We finished in first and won $100, missing very, very few questions during the night, though the visual round was a bit of a stumper! And here go the questions…
Game One
1. What was the first film to star Timothy Dalton as James Bond? 10
2. A letter from a librarian at Fresno’s Lone Star Elementary School inspired Francis Ford Coppola to do what 1983 film? 9
3. Real-life husband and wife Alex Karras and Susan Clark, who would go on to play the parents on the TV series “Webster,” were both cast members in what surprise hit comedy released in late 1981, which spawned two sequels? We picked a movie released in 1981 that spawned two sequels, but did not have these actors in it, miss for 3.
4. What was the last Walt Disney Studios animated film released in the 1980s? 8
5. Robin Williams’ first major film role was playing what title character in a 1980 film? 7
6. What actor played “P.W. Herman” in a “movie within a movie” biopic shown in a drive-in theater about Pee Wee Herman’s life in Pee Wee’s Big Adventure? I think I was literally only one cheering when this answer was read (no shame…I LOVE that movie), 6

Who is THIS actor? Question #6 wants to know!
7. Name both of the directors of the 1982 film The Dark Crystal, each of whom also voiced and performed characters in that film. An image from this movie was shown on the screen that projected the questions, I commented, “It’s Muppets in Avatar.” 5
8. Following her breakout role in The Color Purple, Whoopi Goldberg starred in five films between 1986 and 1988. Name two of those films. Got one, not both, miss for 1.
9. Roman Moronie, Danny Vermin, Jacko Dundee and Ma Kelly are all characters in what 1984 spoof film? First “hit” of the night for David, who was very excited! Got this for 4.
10. According to a 1988 film directed by Ron Shelton, who breaks the minor league record for career home runs? Had the right film, but not the right character, miss for 2. (shakes fis in anger) – “Sportsball!”
Mystery – Haim – or Feldman – or both? Given the movie titles, specify whether they starred Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, or both Coreys.
1. The Fox and the Hound
2. Firstborn
3. The Lost Boys
4. Lucas
Got them all. Got #2 on a coaster flip. Yes, we literally flipped a coaster – “butts, it’s Haim, tree, it’s Feldman.”
Paper visual round:

We only got four of these correct…

10. What 1982 film starring Clint Eastwood shares its name with a popular web browser? Hats off to Matthew for remembering this title at the last second for 5 points!
Mystery – Movie Bombs
Identify the movie that bombed at the U.S box office, given the names of the cast members and release years.

I honestly don’t know why I remembered the title of this movie…but something in my brain remembered that one of my brother’s friends had a crush on this actress (or something to that effect). It doesn’t matter HOW you know an answer in a trivia game, all that matters is you know it! I’ve never even SEEN it…This is a more racy photo than I’m using on the Facebook page (you’re welcome, you loyal blog followers)!
1. 1985 – John Travolta, Marilu Henner, Jamie Lee Curtis, Laraine Newman
2. 1988 – Andrew McCarthy, Patti D’Arbanville, Ben Stiller, Molly Ringwald
3. 1986 – Tim Robbins, Jeffrey Jones, Lea Thompson
4. 1985 – Michael Douglas, Alyson Reed, Janet Jones
Missed #4. A couple of my teammates were aghast, particularly about #1 and #2…”How do you KNOW these movies?” Uh… 🙂
Scores – Nine teams, scores 39 to 115, with us in first. Revenge of the Jedi Nerds were right behind us with 114, and Apollo 15 was in third with 109.
Final Category – Actresses
In 1987, the fifth and 10th highest-grossing films at the U.S box office featured the same lead actress. Discounting voice roles, these films were the highest-grossing films of this actress’ career. Name that actress.
Got it, wagered 30. Finished with 145 points for the night and $100. No prizes given for second, Apollo 15 finished second. Next trivia night is Thursday, recap posted Friday. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Joan Crawford!
