Trivia Recap Jan. 28, 2016 – Stony Lake Brewing Company (Saline)

We are becoming the Boston Red Sox of the pub trivia world. Just like the Red Sox, we are cursed to never, ever get final questions correct…(whine) woe is us. Wait what? Their curse was about something completely different? Meh…who cares…professional baseball players are all overpaid and whiny anyway. More about just how overpaid they are later! For those who have viewed the Sporcle Live final questions from Wednesday, keep reading – our trivia host used a different final question for game one (we are including both final questions in this re-cap). We finished with 101 points, which put us in first for the night. We are just barely behind team Mellows in the standings, but should we choose to make this our “spot” to qualify? Well, it ain’t over until it’s over! We are currently volleying between playing Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This particular Wednesday we brought a trio of ‘Pods to Stony Lake Brewing Co. in Saline, this time they included Heather, Mike, and Brad. And off to the races…
Game One
1. 2000s Movies – what 2001 Baz Luhrmann-directed film is set in a Parisian cabaret of the same name? One of our players mis-heard “cabaret” as “cafe,” but once we ironed that out, we got this for 10.
2. Olympians – During the 1988 Olympics, what diver hit his head on the springboard and went on to win a gold medal after receiving stitches? Nine points.
3. U.S. Capitals – Measured by straight line distance, which capital city is closets to Oklahoma City – Santa Fe, Topeka, Austin, or Little Rock? Got it for 2.
4. Holidays – A popular holiday in Massachusetts, in which month is “Patriot’s Day?” Heather is our ranking “holidays” expert, but didn’t recognize this one. Logic, however, paid off, and we got it for 1.
5. Hot Dogs – What competitive eater won Nathan’s hot dog eating contest from 2007 to 2014? When you win a contest like this, doesn’t this really mean that you’ve lost? FB clue for 8.
6. Rappers – Name one of the two studio albums by MC Hammer to reach #1 or #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts? Got one, but not both, 7 points.
7. Interviews – Audio clue of female comedian with a very distinctive annoying voice (imho), six points.
8. Zodiac – Which sign of the Western zodiac is represented by an inanimate object? Five points.

2. “Anybody can lose one fight.”
3. “You haven’t won a fight since grade five – and that was against a girl.”
4. “Everyone’s afraid to die alone.”
Missed #4.
Standings: Eight teams with scores ranging from 29 to 61, with us taking the top spot.
Final Category: Cereal Boxes
The first non-orange Wheaties box was released in the 1990s to commemorate the championship of what U.S. professional sports team?
Nope. Wagered 14 on this and went down to 47, edging us slightly out of the money. Team Two Birds and Nine were in the top spots each with 49 points. Do not recall their tiebreaker question, and did not write it down.
All other venues had this final question instead:
The Progressive Party of which northeast state holds nine seats in that state’s legislature?
This is more seats than any other third party holds in any other state.
Game Two
1. Books – Which U.S. president wrote “Six Crises,” published in 1962? Miss for 3.
2. Architecture – What style of architecture is the famed cathedral Notre Dame in Paris? Ten points.
3. Child actresses – Soleil-Moon Frye played what TV character for four seasons in the ’80s? A “Hebagory” for 9 points (yes she actually watched that show…she was young and she needed the money, lol).
4. Pro Sports – How many pro teams play their home games in Tennessee? Name them all for nerd point, got both for 8.
5. Jimmy Buffett Lyrics – What food is being eaten in the first line of “Margaritaville?” No “parrotheads” among us…miss for 1.
6. Magazines – What Australian model has appeared on the most “Sports Illustrated” swimsuit editions – five times more than any other person? Brad and Heather teamwork for 4. And Mike got to pick the photo we are using with this re-cap (you’re welcome!).

8. Movie Quotes – Who said “Invention, my dear friends, is 93% perspiration, 6% electricity, 4% evaporation, and 2% butterscotch ripple?” Six points.
9. Word Origins – The word “plagiarism” is derived from what Latin word for a specific crime? Nope, miss for 2.
10. Pet Foods – What famous pet food is so good that cats ask for it by name? Five points.
Visual mystery:
Missed all of these except #2. Not the right group to know these…
Heading into the final: Nine teams with scores ranging from 34 to 59, with Team Six taking the top spot. We were in third with 57 points. Darn mystery round (pout)!
Final Category: Professional Sports salaries
As of 2015, among North American-based franchises, which team has the highest payroll, based on annual average salaries?
We brainstormed several possibilities, including the one that was correct, but we opted for a franchise closer to home. We wagered even more conservatively, so only lost three points. Just out of the money zone, the top teams Putting Things in Boxes – and Team six had the top score with 58 and 59 points respectively thanks to zero bets. Next week we will be returning to an old haunt – Sticks in Ypsilanti – in honor of our friend and “founder” Sam, who will be in town for one night only. The OGs will be in da house! Would love some other teams to come out to play! Anyone? Anyone? Yeah, that’s what we figured! Go Pods!
