It’s a rare thing, but it has happened with our trivia team occasionally.
What’s that you ask? Playing in a trivia spot that offers trivia nights in two different trivia companies!
My Trivia Live hosts trivia games 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, Sporcle Events hosts at 7 p.m. Saturdays at Oscars.
I know, I know. It’s not really as exciting as I’m making it sound. But when you’ve been playing pub trivia games as long as we have, sometimes we like to venture out and try different things!
Previously, we played at Oscar’s in the Sporcle Events league as an “occasional” spot. But that was mainly before the pandemic. Though we have played there maybe a handful of times since then.
I think our Oscar’s visits are officially behind us now. After two visits in a row of not having any servers in the dining area take care of our drink orders? Add to that not be able to hear questions on the mic – at all – if you sit in the bar area?
I’m going to sound like a Minnesotan, but that’s a “Yeah no” for me.
Earlier this year at Oscars, we had to actually go to another staff member to ask where our server had wandered off to after being ignored for more than an hour. When she finally got around to bringing drinks to us, she slammed them on the table (not classy).
Maybe it’s a great trivia spot for some teams, but it’s obviously not for us. Are we cursed to get shitty service whenever we go here?
On a positive note, hats off to the actual bartender for taking great care of us! Whomever he was – he was definitely on the ball! But after we moved over into the dining area so we could hear the questions, we might as well have been invisible to the servers working over there. I had to walk up to the bar to get second drinks for us after more than one server walked by our table without even acknowledging us.
The things we do to be able to just hear trivia questions, right? 🤔
Before this thing starts resembling a Yelp review too much, how about I get to the (very abbreviated) trivia questions?
Round One
Disasters – What natural disaster, the deadliest in nearly 60 years, killed 161 people in Joplin, MO in 2011?
Spanish – What does “casa” mean in the phrase “Mi casa, su casa?”
Musicians – What Beatles drummer says that his grandmother forced him to write with his right hand although he favored doing everything else with his left hand?
Round Two
New Sports – The AYSO sports organization deals with what youth sport?
Comedy Films – What specific word should never be uttered on a plane, per the dialogue in the film Meet the Parents?
Now for the “And More” question (MTL regulars will know what this is). It’s a question with an additional harder question piggy backed on it that will void all of your points if you miss the second part. Got it? Good!
Hair – Trying to soothe a hangover with another drink is called having “hair of the what?”
Now I have that Nazareth song in my head! Now you’re messing with…
Bonus question (the and more part): What word describes the study of the hair or scalp?
We opted not to answer the second part so as not to risk our points.
Round Three
Mathematics – What is the sum of the first five prime numbers? We missed this…we overlooked an obvious prime number. Someone send us to a remedial math class pronto!
Voice Actors – What host of the 2023 series The Traitors also narrated an audiobook version of Dracula alongside Tim Curry? Nope.

Government – Scott Bessent is the highest ranking openly gay member of Trump’s cabinet overseeing what department? Miss.
Halftime – City Pairs – TV Show Settings
Given the following pairs of TV series, identify the cities in which they are primarily set.
H1 Golden Girls/Burn Notice
H2 The Residence/Designated Survivor
H3 The Bear/Mike and Molly
H4 Fuller House/Charmed
We got all of these correct.
Halftime scores: 19, Better Late than Pregnant, 28, Us/Team 7; 31, ???; 35, Team 3; 36, Team 6/King Cobra.
Round Four
Fashion – What fashion style is described by, for example, combining a motorcycle jacket with a ruffled skirt, commonly abbreviated “boho?” Some confusion about this question on our part, so we missed this (although I did think of the right thing).
Tunnels – The Holland Tunnel connects New York City to what city in a different state? Miss.
Broadway – Jane Seymour and Catherine Parr are characters in what musical? I know who both of these women are, but didn’t know what musical they appeared in. But I’m curious – do they still sing after their heads are severed? Inquiring minds gotta know! I might watch that mystical if this happens in it!
Can we get any questions right this next round? Read on to see!
Round Five
Cookie Names – What Nabisco cookie shares its name with a maiden from a historical romance novel by R.D. Blackmore? Yay we got this!
The Greeks – What ancient Greek historian is credited with first saying Egypt is “The Gift of the Nile?” Miss.
Movie Animals – What is the first and last name of the Bengal tiger in the movie Life of Pi? I remember seeing this movie once. I honestly can’t remember anything significant about this movie, let alone the tiger’s first and last name. My bad… 🐯
Round Six
The Body – What is the name of the inner ear part that is shaped like a snail?
Songs – What specific day of the week is mentioned more than once in the Black Eyed Peas song “I’ve Gotta Feeling?” Miss.
Internet – As of mid 2024, what second most visited web site had 14.8 billion video views? We picked another video sharing site, Miss.
Scores heading into the final:
Better Late than Pregnant, 43; Us, 46; Risky Quizness, 54; Crayons, 55; ???, 60; Milliseconds, 63; and King Cobra, 72.
Final category: MagazinesWhat magazine founded in 1922 was founded by a former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and originally had the word “fruit” as part of its name?
We got this, but so did virtually every team ahead of us.
Team Milliseconds finished first, unsure who finished second and third.
This concludes our trivial pursuits for the week. We’ll be back at it for a Sporcle Events music quiz game Monday at Arbor Brewing Company in Ypsi.
As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Alan Cumming!
