Trivia Recap – July 30, 2026 – McShane’s Pub – My Trivia Live – Ypsilanti, MI

We traveled around a bit in our July trivial pursuits. Our “tour” included a visit to the Sporcle Events spots Aubree’s in Ypsilanti Township and Original Gravity in Milan as well as Jester’s in Flint for its My Trivia Live music trivia scene.

After all of that and a recent Up North trip, we decided that there was…

No place like home!

So we took our partial gift card prize and went to McShane’s Pub for its My Trivia Live show. It’s become a semi- regular spot for us, and we’ve had decent luck winning trivia prizes here.

The most recent trivia night was no exception! We won first place and took home a $30 prize.

Here were our questions, which might be revised, abridged and rewritten:

Round One

Phrases – If you don’t understand a pop culture reference because it’s too old or young, or just plain don’t understand something else someone says to you, it goes over what body part, per the expression?

Around the House – What machine commonly found in a house is most likely to have an agitator?

Cable TV – In 1992, Turner Broadcasting launched what channel geared toward showing classic animation?

Round Two

The Law – What six-word thing can a prisoner look forward to after serving his or her sentence?

At the Movies – A poster for what 2026 movie shows a tablet named Lily Pad saying “Hi, let’s play?” Good guess.

Sports Announcements – What person with the first name Mark was announced as the new home run record holder in 1998? Give the last name of the person.

Round Three

In the Dictionary – The word “apothecary” is a synonym for what word per Merriam-Webster?

Party Songs – What artist had a hit song with the lyrics “Everybody’s in the bar getting  tipsy?” No year was given for this question, apparently there were two artists recording songs with this lyric set (per my trivia pardner Kim, who was not present at this game (though I did share the question with her later). We didn’t know it anyway, but other teams may have gotten confused? I have no idea…

Same Name – What name is given to the speech given to graduates at a commencement or to the degrees given to graduates themselves?

Halftime – We had to give two words, four letters each, that fit each of these descriptions:

H1 WWE rassler and actor who recently retired from rassling

H2 Amazon Prime series about a real life person named Ronald who thinks he’s doing his job but is actually surrounded by actors

H3 One Republic song with the lyrics “Tell me what there is to complain about.”

H4 2020 video game described by Gamespot as “cute” and similar to Double Dare and Wipeout

Missed 3 and 4.

Round Four

Boating – What word ending in a double letter describes a watercraft with just an outboard motor and a place to sit?

Cooking – What color is the French sauce described as Espagnole? Miss.

Poetry in Motion – Who wrote the “O Captain, O Captain” poem used prominently in Dead Poets Society?

Round Five

Art – What artist painted the second version of The Bedroom which is displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago and depicts his beloved yellow house in Arles?

Europe – What city in Southwestern Germany is well known for being a spa town? We used our “answer of the week” option to get out of answering this for free points.

Synth Pop – What did Depeche Mode’s biggest hit song tell listeners to “enjoy?” Kind of a softball for a virtual expert in this band like me, but if this is gonna be a round five question, I won’t complain!

Round Six

Battles – What battle shares its name with a 26 mile race commonly done by die-hard runners? This question is heavily reworded because I didn’t have time to use Google to check the spellings of all of the Greek things in this question (full disclosure)! I hope I’ve made this easier for you all, we missed this but would have gotten it correct had it been worded like this 😁

TV Cities – What fictional city providing the setting for King of the Hill has creator Mike Judge said is based on the real life Dallas suburb of Richardson?

Logos – White and what other color make up the AT&T logo?

We were in second with 62 points heading into the final out of six teams. Ypsi Starlings Rugby were in first with 67 points (they had a perfect score of 37 points at the halftime).

Final Category – Shakespeare

What Shakespearean character commonly known as comedic with a rotund figure appears as a friend to Henry IV in Henry V and also as a suitor in The Merry Wives of Windsor?

What luck that they’d actually ask about one of the plays of his I’ve actually read? Boy did my weird Shakespeare professor love talking about this guy (along with his sex life and how because he had epilepsy he wasn’t supposed to…have sex – yes he actually said this to the class, adding that he had three kids so he didn’t follow that rule). Also he sounded exactly like Winnie the Pooh when he talked. What would a shrink say if I were lying on a couch and telling them about this?

How exactly did the topic of epilepsy come up in one of his lectures? If I had access to a time machine, I’d go back in time to 1994 to find out! Also to bet on the World Cup 😂 ⚽ 🏆

All of that disturbing college story aside, we got this correct. No other teams got this correct. Weird. We thought this was so easy that most teams would get it (Starlings guess was really really close to being correct, so nice try)!

Our trivia nights may be changing soon because of my work schedule becoming more busy. Rest assured the trivia will not stop!

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Martin Gore!
