Feels Like The First Time 🎶

Now that I’ve gotten a Foreigner song in your heads (bwa ha ha) – and I’m trying not to get my hopes up TOO much, but it looks like I’ll have a team for a trivia game next week! Which means “maybe” more than five players!

I remember when us having that many – or more – players at our weekly trivia games was a thing – before we had to start killing some of them off for not knowing enough about top draft picks or Primetime Emmy Award winners (JK, JK)!

In reality, life happens. I had three players move out of state, one defected and formed his own team that plays in a town about 25 minutes south of us, other players simply lost interest, and one had the audacity to depart after calling me an asshole for not including him on a tournament roster (he was seldom available for tournament games without me having to beg in addition to bad mouthing me behind my back), and another stopped playing live games after becoming a new daddy. That loss really hurt us the most (we miss you please let me know when you can come back)!

Not to mention the sad loss of a dear friend and occasional “sub” for my team – Archie – who died of cancer in 2019. 😢

And then…pow – Pandemic 2020 happened. Which of course caused countless bars to close their doors (among other things).

Fast forward from Pandemic 2020, and also rewind a few nights ago when me and a couple of my longtime trivia “homies” were hitting up last call at a local bar after a trivia night in a different bar. We happened to run into a group of people we know ending their board game meetup. One of them was a guy whose trivia team dissolved after the pandemic, but said he still occasionally plays virtual trivia games. We got to talking, and he’ll be joining us! I’m hoping that another longtime player of mine – and his wife – will play, too (he has given me a maybe answer for both of them). Never, ever turn your nose up at “plus ones” in trivia games! They can be wild cards – you just never know what they’ll know! Chances are it will be some answer about a TV series you never watched, or maybe a Broadway show or something.

No I’m still not saying when – or where this game will happen.

It’s been a big uphill climb getting back into the live trivia scene again! A few nights ago, my husband told me about a trivia team sitting next to us groaning about being in a tiebreaker with a certain player from another team. He said, “I can get my wife to stand in for you guys – she’s great at tiebbreakers!” I was already outside and walking toward the car while all of this was going on. I don’t think I would have done well on this particular tiebreaker q anyway. But that was still cool of him to say that!

Sigh..made me think of a tiebreaker I’d won at Johnny’s Grill several years ago which involved giving the year that the Elmore Leonard novel Get Shorty was published! Almost better than winning that tiebreaker for third place at a tournament in 2019 for $500!

Good times… ☺

  1. I used to be on several different Trivia teams over the years, but at this point I can’t even remember the last time I played a live Trivia game. One team I had a falling out with, and three others basically dissolved, mostly after COVID.
