Trivia Recap – Game # 772 – June 16, 2023 – Virtual Sporcle “Pub Quiz” Format

It wasn’t the best ending to a work week for the two of us…my husband was relieved of his employment on Thursday, and neither of us were in the best head space as a result! Forgive us for forgetting about which paper currency Grover Cleveland’s face was on let alone James Madison’s (seriously when have we ever had that much money in our hot little hands)? Joking of course, my hands aren’t that little! We thought a virtual trivia game might be a nice little diversion, especially since a longtime friend would be joining in on the game and the host left his chat rooms open a generous amount of time after the game for this to happen.

We also picked a musical movie about paperboys for our final question answer when we should have thought about THAT horrible movie with the even worse cover song that radio stations wouldn’t stop playing. Sorry if my second-hand angst over my husband losing his job – of just shy of 20 years – creeped into this recap. It is what it is…

Round One

Let’s start with a question about money! Way to stick the knife into a person who just lost his job, right? And I only recently learned that this bit from The Simpsons was a reference to Cabaret (I really do need to see that movie). Alas, watching snippets from the Cabaret episodes of Schitt’s Creek is probably the closest I’ll get anytime soon!

1 Money Former U.S. president Grover Cleveland was featured on what now-discontinued denomination of U.S. paper money?

NERD POINT: What now-discontinued denomination featured James Madison?

Nope and nope…

2 Books What title character in a 1902 children’s book by Beatrix Potter loses his jacket and shoes in Mr. McGregor’s garden? Yay we got this one correct!

3 Film Characters Gene Kranz, Fred Haise, Jack Swigert, and Jim Lovell are among the real-life people portrayed by actorsin what 1995 film? Being a bit loopy (from life, not from alcohol) I called this “Forrest Gump in Space – the sequel to Forrest Gump.” I think there actually was talk of doing a sequel to that movie, but obviously, it wasn’t in the box of chocolates.

4 Hit Songs What Canadian band has had six top ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, most recently with the 2008 single “Gotta Be Somebody” from the album Dark Horse? Nope.

Mystery Round One

For this mystery round, your team can give four answers and can put them in any order you choose. Teams will receive two points for each correct answer.

Give the team names of four of the five MLB franchises in the National League East division.

We picked three correct teams.

Round Two

5 Alcohol – In the United States, what five-letter term is used for the measure of the content of ethanol in an alcoholic beverage?

6 Animals – What is the common name for a gastropod that lacks a shell?

7 City Nicknames – Because of its history with iron and steel industries, the city of Birmingham, Alabama, is nicknamed the WHAT “of the South,” a reference to a northern city? Teamwork prevailed here.

8 Logos – The Evian brand of spring water has a logo depicting mountains due to its sources being located near what mountain range?

Mystery Round Two – Visual

We had 48 points going into the final.

1990s Movies:

Four of the five films that were released in the 1990s and had multiple songs nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song won the award. What 1992 film is the only one that did not win, losing to an animated film that also had multiple songs nominated?

Nope, we went with the newsboy musical featuring Christian Bale which was released the same year. Didn’t it get a Razzie or something? Hmm…

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, you people who fired my husband! A stick in the eye to you lads! 😦 May the beer you get at the bar not have any carbonation!

  2. I only missed Nebula, the Alps and the Bodyguard. BTW, I absolutely hate the music from the bodyguard, especially the song I Will Always Love You.

On your question about Apollo 13, you name the real people twice, not the actors, who were Tom Hanks, Pill Paxton, Kevin Bacon and Ed Harris.
