Just when we were feeling so smart for actually knowing the answer to a question about music that wasn’t recorded 30 years ago or earlier – bam. That second mystery round about best new artists Grammy winners from the 2000s, though – total goose egg for the two of us. Not to mention that Demi Moore film based on a novel many of us were forced to read in high school (most but not all teams missed this one, two teams posted perfect games). Or was it only one?
Here were our questions:
Round one
1 Populations – Which of the seven continents is home to nearly 60% of the world population, as of 2021 estimates?
2 X Men – Which member of the X-Men first appeared in 1975 and uses the alter ego of a quiet, six-foot-seven-inch man named Piotr Nikolayevich Rasputin? His primary mutant ability is transforming his body into a metallic substance. Nerdy husband all over this.
3 Albums – What singer’s best-selling album in the U.S. is the 2010 release Doo-Wops & Hooligans, which is certified 5x (five-times) Platinum and includes the #1 singles “Just the Way You Are” and “Grenade?” I was so excited to actually get a semi recent music question correct! A rarity for is!
4 US History – Who was the U.S. president when the 49th and 50th states, Alaska and Hawaii, were admitted to the Union?NERD POINT: Who was the U.S. president when New Mexico and Arizona were admitted to the Union? Missed the bonus, picked the president serving before the correct one.
Mystery Round One
Name the film with a three-word title beginning with “the,” based on the year of release and three of its cast members.
M1. (1997) Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman
M2. (2008) Christian Bale, Morgan Freeman, and Gary Oldman
M3. (1995) Demi Moore, Robert Duvall, and Gary Oldman
M4. (2017) Ryan Reynolds, Salma Hayek, and Gary Oldman
Missed #3. I’m still traumatized from having to read this novel in the 9th grade!
Round Two
5 Olympics – What is the only city in Spain that has hosted an Olympic Games?
6 Words – What “F” word refers to a person who generally follows a plant-based diet but will occasionally include meat or fish and is also known as a semi-vegetarian? “Faker” not correct!
7 TV Music – “The Song That Doesn’t End” is the closing theme to a 1990s children’s show featuring what title character? We actually picked the right option out of two discussed, also a rarity for us!
8 LIterary Characters – Woodhouse is the last name of what title character in a novel by Jane Austen? In the opening sentence of the book, the character is described as having “lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.” FB clue.
Mystery Round Two- Visual
We mmissed every one of these. We honestly don’t know the difference between Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Undercarriage (don’t correct me)! And doesn’t everyone like to rip on band #1? Also, we thought woman in #3 was darker skinned, add to that us having no fucking clue who #4 was, and total mystery round FAIL!
We were in umpteenth place with 43 points going into the final, this was yet another virtual game where some team was lucky or “smart” enough to have a perfect game – even though teams with perfect games are rare in the live trivia world. But what do I know (not as much as the perfect scoring team apparently)!
Final Category – World Languages
he Uralic family of languages includes Finnish, Estonian, and many others spoken primarily in Russia and Scandinavia. However, its largest language by number of speakers, also known as Magyar, is the official language of what Central European country?
Got this, so did most teams ahead of us (not all).
Honestly if there are virtual trivia gamers cheating to get the correct answers, why? With no cash prizes and standings virtually meaningless, what’s the incentive?
Hey if there really are teams getting perfect scores doing so legitimately – go you!
Go Pods and stay classy, Maroon Five!
Round One
Asia, colossus, Bruno Mars, eisenhower/Taft
M1
The fifth element, the dark knight, the scarlet letter, the hitmans bodyguard
Round 2
