Trivia Recap – Game # 705 – August 3, 2022 – Virtual Sporcle “Pub Quiz” Format

Sometimes when you think of the Major League Baseball players who appeared in “The Simpsons” episode “Homer at the Bat,” you actually think of the right person you need for a trivia question about…baseball!

Then there is the time that you don’t, which was the case in a recent virtual trivia game! BTW, it’s Season 3, episode 17!

Did you know that Don Mattingly had issues involving his hair when he played for the New York Yankees under the famous George Steinbrenner? He also had issues with his softball coach Mr. Burns, and he muttered, “He’s still better than Steinbrenner!

Round One

1 Viral Trends – In a recent viral trend accompanied by the #gentleminions, young people have been attending Minions: The Rise of Gru in theaters while wearing what type of clothing? We incorrectly guessed overalls. This fad is off our radar (no apologies).

2 Fashion – What type of skirt popularized in the 1950s is named for a breed of dog that was often featured in its design? Poodle? I’ve been wearing rottweiler skirts all this time! No wonder people look at me funny… (JK)!

3 Slang – The slang phrase “fair dinkum” has a meaning equivalent to “the real deal” in what English-speaking country? Thank you FB host clue…I still check for ’em before every game! Nice little lifelines.

4 Literature – In the book The Hunger Games, tracker jackers are a modified variety of what animal used for nefarious purposes by the Capitol? Thank goodness my trivia pardner Mike paid enough attention to this movie to know this…

Mystery Round One –

Name the music “supergroup” based on the list of some or all of its members.

1. Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak

2. Chris Cornell, Tom Morello, and Brad Wilk

3. Miranda Lambert and Ashley Monroe

4. Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce

WHAT? No questions about Bad English, Damn Yankees or the Traveling Wilburys? I’m so outta here!

Yeah, we only got #2 and #4 right. And I had no idea #4 was a “Supergroup,” though Ginger Baker’s powers as a drummer were certainly super! How many rock drummers do solos that last more than five minutes? And if you didn’t listen to them, he’d probably kick your teeth in (that man had a temper)! But I digress…

Round Two
5 Rivers – The Shatt al-Arab is a 120-mile-long river in what country, where it is formed by the confluence of two major rivers? Yay I paid enough attention in world history class…

6 Revivals – The Ewing family is central to what TV series that originally ran from 1978-1991 and was revived on TNT from 2012-2014? Pop…culture…101. Who misses questions like these? I never watched a single episode of this show (I was more of a Dynasty gal). But you would have had to have been living in your grandparents’ underground bomb shelter to NOT absorb this pop culture phenomenon!

7 Nicknames – Name one of the two players who made up a duo known as the “Bash Brothers” while playing for the Oakland A’s in the 1980s and early 1990s.
NERD POINT: Name both.

We guessed a player from “Homer at the Bat.” We guessed wrong. And no, it wasn’t Don Mattingly!

8 Politics – Who is the highest-ranking woman official in the history of the U.S. federal government?

Mystery Round Two –

Name the film that has a number in the title based on the brief plot description.

M1. Tom Selleck, Ted Danson, and Steve Guttenberg hilariously try to take care of an infant—and get mixed up in a drug deal, for some reason

M2. Eminem loses himself in the role of rapper B-Rabbit in a film based not-so-loosely on his own life

M3. Kate Hudson practices the absolute worst girlfriend behavior for a magazine article she’s writing, but Matthew McConaughey can’t break up with her because of a bet

M4. Eddie Murphy finds a good buddy in cop Nick Nolte, who springs him from prison to help hunt down one of his former criminal associates

Got all of these. We were in fifth with 42 points going into the final.

Final category – Zodiac

Name the three animals in the Chinese zodiac that have names in English that are exactly six letters long.

We played in an Ultimate Frisbee league in the long, long ago and my husband’s Chinese Zodiac disc design won in 2005. Good thing we remembered what tiny animals he had to draw! He used the design name “Welcome to the China Club” as a nod to Dave Chappelle.

Got this correct, did not move us up any. Oh well, it was still fun!
As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Kate Hudson!
