Trivia Recap – Game # 681 – May 27, 2022 – Virtual Sporcle “Pub Quiz” Format

We like to celebrate even the tiniest of victories on our trivia team these days. Even if that means coming up with fake brothers and sisters for astronaut Michael Collins – one of his brothers was a popular cocktail, one of his brothers was a pop singer and part of the group Genesis, and he also had a singer for a sister who supposedly inspired the Crosby, Stills and Nash song “Judy Blue Eyes” (none of these things are true, BTW). Except the part about Judy Collins possibly being an inspiration for that song!

Stephen Stills and Judy Collins

Sadly, we didn’t remember Michael Collins’ name in the trivia game, so all of this happened after the answer to the “astronauts” question was revealed. And that inspired even more conversation! I mean…the guy goes all the way to the moon – and stays in the lander the entire time? Leaving all of the glory to the other two astronauts (whose names we did remember)? WTF? Was he trying to keep it from being stolen? 🙂 My husband Mike said, “That’s kind of like going to Cedar Point and just staying in the parking lot all day.” Someone had to do it, apparently, and sometimes you draw the short straw.

What other little victory did we celebrate? Beating a team that we never, ever, ever beat in virtual games! A gentlemen never asks, and a lady never tells, so I’m not saying which team that was! But we accomplished this feat by wagering zero on a final question about NBA teams. This little “victory” still put us in eighth place, but that was still a bit higher than (I’m not saying who)!

Here were our questions:

Round One

1 CANDY – What candy bar, which consists of flavored nougat covered in a chocolate coating, was created in 1925 by the Fox-Cross Candy Company and was named for a then-popular dance?

2 HOLIDAYS – What special occasion is celebrated during May Two-Four which also refers to a long weekend in Canada that signifies that unofficial start of Summer? Miss. Clearly we are not Canadian enough. Watching “Letterkenny,” “Murdoch Mysteries,” “Schitt’s Creek” and “Shoresy” is apparently not enough!!!

3 STAR WARS – What is the name of the spaceport town in the Star Wars universe on planet Tatooine, home to a seedy cantina that was described by Obi-Wan Kenobi as a ‘wretched hive of scum and villany’?

4 SONG LYRICS – Which 20th century U.S. president is the first name referenced in the #1 hit single “We Didn’t Start the Fire” by Billy Joel

Mystery One – Asian and Pacific Islander TV Shows

Name the TV series with Asian American influence based on the clue.

M1. ABC series that aired from 2015-2020 based on an autobiography by Eddie Huang

M2. Netflix series co-created by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang

M3. Comedy Central series starring the performer born Nora Lum in 1988

M4. TV series that aired on Fox and Hulu from 2012-2017, in which the show’s creator plays the title character, who is an OB/GYN in New York

Missed #2 and #4.

Round Two

5 TOURISM – Pier 39 is a popular shopping center and tourist attraction, including restaurants, an aquarium, and wild sea lions, that is located in what major U.S. city? Good guess, though we were not sure.

6 ACTORS – What actor has appeared in each of the following films: No Country for Old Men, Friends with Benefits, and The Hunger Games?

7 SOCIAL MEDIA – Uploaded in 2010, the first image posted to Instagram was a picture of what kind of animal—fish, dog, horse, or bird? Miss.

ASTRONAUTS – Name two of the three astronauts that flew on the Apollo 11 mission in July 1969. Name the third astronaut for a nerd bonus point. Missed the bonus.

NATIONAL PARKS – Name the U.S. state that is home to each of the given national parks.

M1. Hot Springs

M2. Joshua Tree

M3. Theodore Roosevelt

M4. Petrified Forest

Missed #3.

I’m not sure what place we were in going into the final, because our host does not reveal those things. But it was bottom dwelling, and we had 43 points.

Final Category – NBA TEAMS – Since 1970, There Have Been Four Team Names Used By NBA Franchises That Are Not Currently Used.

Name Two Of Those Four Defunct NBA Team Names.

(For Example: Until 1963, The Philadelphia 76ers Were Known As The Syracuse Nationals, So “Nationals” Is A Team Name That Is Not Currently Used By Any Of The 30 NBA Franchises. This Does Not Include Team Names Used By ABA Franchises Before They Merged With The NBA.)

We were in eighth after the final. Unsure if we moved up or not…doesn’t matter, we had fun!

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Phil Collins (whom was NOT Michael Collins’ brother)! Or Judy Collins’ sister! Was he ever in a relationship with Tom Collins? Maybe!
