Me and my “music trivia pardner” Kim (in addition to my husband Mike) put our heads together Saturday evening on a question set all about Billboard hits.
1. Triple Threats – What singer, dancer, and actress has had four #1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, the first of which was “If You Had My Love” in 1999? Kim all over this one…
2. Rock Bands – In 1984, “Jump” became the only song to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by what band, who reached #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart twelve other times?
3. Samples – The 1972 song “Woman to Woman” by Joe Cocker was sampled by what 1996 song that reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart? We just couldn’t come up with this…clearly we had no “love” of this question.
4. Awards – What song, written by Hal David and Burt Bacharach, won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid? We had a similar question in a My Trivia Live game a few years ago and Brad was the one who was all over this answer. And because of this, I remembered it for this game! We’ll forgive the young host for not knowing how to pronounce this great songwriter’s last name (hint – it’s NOT “Batch a Ratch)!
5. ’90s – Elton John had two songs reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the 1990s, including “Something About the Way You Look Tonight/Candle in the Wind 1997.”
Name the other song, which was a re-release of an earlier single, this time as a duet with George Michael.
6. Boy Bands – What is the only song by the Backstreet Boys that has hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100? Nope, picked the “other” popular BS boys song.
7. Un-American – What is the only Billboard Hot 100 #1 song released by the now 24-year-old singer from New Zealand who has also reached the top twenty with “Green Light” and “Team?” Really how many other singers are there from New Zealand – besides the lead singer from Crowded House – and Lucy Lawless (she played Rizzo in Grease)! I think she even sang in a couple of episodes! When Mike saw a photo of the correct person, he quipped, “That is a woman who doesn’t wash” (ouch buddy)! Cleanliness shaming indeed!
8. Songwriters – What singer-songwriter wrote the song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which spent four weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 when Sinéad O’Connor released it in 1990? “Sinead” is a frequently mispronounced word by trivia hosts and this night was no exception – but we were nice about it when correcting him!
9. Lead and Featured – 50 Cent has been a credited artist on four songs that have reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, ahead of his #2 songs “Magic Stick” and “Hate It or Love It.”
Name two of those four songs.
10. Song Titles – What seven-letter word completes the title of a song about a woman waiting to hear from her long-distance boyfriend, which was first Motown song to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100?
Given the artist and year(s), identify the titles of songs that are among the 11 songs to have hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with titles of three or fewer characters.
Britney Spears (2009)
Edwin Starr (1970)
Michael Jackson (either 1972 or 1987)
Cardi B feat. Megan Thee Stallion (2020)
We got three of these correct, missed the Britney Spears song. But as Mike joked, “If you know a lot about Britney Spears songs, this means that you both win – and lose.” We picked the older of the MJ songs (I said “I think it was about a mouse or something”).
Sadly, there were only five teams playing in this game – and we were in third with 54 points – five point away from the top top dogs.
Final Category: Cover Songs
What song, originally released in 1974 by The Eleventh Hour, hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 two other times as recorded by other artists—once in 1975 as a single from an album titled Nightbirds, and once in 2001 as the lead single from an Academy Award-winning film?
Good teamwork in coming up with this answer. I knew the lyrics – and Kim knew the title. Boom! Didn’t change the standings, but it’s always nice getting final questions correct!
As always, Go Pods – and stay classy, Megan Thee Stallion (though if you do, who’s going to watch your videos)?
