I honestly can’t explain why it took so long, but I finally got around to seeing Poltergeist (1982) tonight. I’m speculating that I missed seeing this when it first came out (I was 10) because I was at summer camp. But my older brother provided a very detailed synopsis for me, as did multiple other people. Maybe I felt like I didn’t “need” to see it? No idea…
What a trip down memory lane! Wall to wall carpeting, drab interior colors, wallpaper everywhere, wood paneled station wagons, Craig T. Nelson before he did “Coach,” and JoBeth Williams after she was Dustin Hoffman’s booty call in Kramer Vs. Kramer. That tree scene was pretty wicked!
Short clairvoyant lady stole the show. Injected much needed life when the story started to lag a bit. Wasn’t she just too adorable?
Sad that Heather O’Rourke died so young (some kind of intestinal blockage). She never had a chance to hit rock bottom from substance abuse, go to rehab, clean up, go back to rehab and pay someone to write a lurid tell-all book. Better to remember her as the young, innocent and very annoying Carol Anne than a grown up, strung-out washed-up has-been. Too many young actors have been chewed up and spit out by Hollywood’s powers that be (don’t get me started on Judy Garland).
Will have to see what other blockbusters I missed the first time around!
