Trivia Recap – Virtual/Streaming – Lord of the Rings Theme (Expanded Universe) – September 24, 2020

Editor’s note: I’m still waiting for my new camera battery to arrive from Amazon (supposed to arrive Monday). Again, no answers to these questions unless I happen to remember them. I’m not taking photos of all of the questions and answers.

Had we looked into this thing before the game, maybe we would have changed our minds about playing!

I assembled a small “fellowship” of players to attempt to correctly answer a tricksy battery of “Tolkien Expanded Universe” trivia questions. Which included questions about the books, and all of the movies that have been made about his books. Even those awful Hobbit movies.

Had actual prize money been on the line, we might’ve tried a bit harder to answer the questions! But…meh. It was still fun to be able to virtually see Sam and Angela (we miss you guys)!

And here were the questions we attempted to answer (some of them correctly)!

#1 – Animals – What kind of animal is Beorn able to change into?

OK, OK…maybe Bard being kind of cute was one of maybe two reasons to see the Hobbit films!

#2 – Weapons – What exact weapon needs to be used to fire the arrow to kill Smaug in the Hobbit films? Miss. Obviously we didn’t pay attention to The Hobbit movies as well as we should have (no shame). Elf/dwarf romances, Legolas in it for absolutely no reason at all making Radagast into an utter and complete joke, essentially making him the Jar Jar Binks of The Hobbit franchise? Yes it was cool to hear Benedict Cumberbatch voicing Smaug, but that was pretty much the only reason to see these movies, imho. They’re like the Star Wars prequels (fly over movies).

#3 – Weapons – What is the Sindarin name for the Lonely Mountain and former Dwarf-kingdom?

#4 What is the name of the House that Aragorn belongs to, which has a name that is a Quenya translation of “Strider”? Miss. Where on earth did they dredge this fact from? Must be dank, LOL. We went with the Gondorian house name, not the name that Aragorn made up.

#5 – The Towers of the Teeth guard over what entry into Mordor, which was the location of one of the final battles in the War of the Ring?

#6 While in the Trollshaws, Thorin and company get captured by three trolls who plan to eat them. While menacing, the trolls have fairly normal-sounding names – what are they?

#7 What spherical object found by Pippin in the shallow waters outside Orthanc allows Sauron to attack his mind?

#8 What was Sam cooking when Faramir and his soldiers spot their campfire and take them for questioning?

#9 How many Great Rings were forged and given to the elves, dwarf-lords, and men, excluding The Master Ring forged by Sauron?

#10 In the Two Towers film, when the refugees from Edoras get attacked by orcs en route to Helm’s Deep, who gets stuck under a pile of dead wargs during the fight?

Name four of the five different locations in either the books or films or both in which Frodo was shown to have worn the ring.

Got two of these correct.

Final – Companions

Of the twelve companions of Thorin, the subject of The Hobbit, name five of the seven still alive during The War of the Ring.

Damn…we included the “lucky number guy” and we shouldn’t have! Had we left him out and replaced him, we would’ve gotten this correct.

Unsure when our next virtual trivia game will be. We’ll keep an eye out for interesting trivia themes. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Bert, Tom and William the trolls!
