Our brains were long past the optimal point for useless knowledge tidbits retrieval when we played an 11 p.m. Sporcle Live “virtual” trivia game hosted by a guy who used to host at The Owl (Tyler B, I loved his tendency to play ’80s tunes and his laid back attitude). Friday night about horror films (we used the team named This is My Boomstick)! But just like those stupid people in horror films who go into that haunted house, have sex in cabins in creepy summer camps and have the audacity to walk around alone outside on Halloween eve while an escaped mental institution inmate is on the loose- or just be a cute blonde girl saying “They’re here?” If you guys were in the audience, you would be yelling, “Don’t do it! Don’t try doing horror movies trivia after you’ve had a few beers beforehand! For God’s sake just go to bed or watch old reruns of Rick and Morty” But then, that would be pretty boring horror film if we did smart stuff, wouldn’t it?

Should you care to continue reading about the ensuing nightmare, here were the questions:
1.) What character is played by Johnny Depp in the 1999 film Sleepy Hollow?
2.) First heard in A Nightmare on Elm Street, what three words complete fill the blanks in the following quote?
“One, two, Freddy’s coming for you; three, four, better lock your door;
Five, six, ___ ___ ___; nine, ten, never sleep again.”
3.) What 2013 horror film produced by Guillermo del Toro features young characters named Victoria and Lilly, and is based on a 2008 Argentine short film of the same name? “Meh, not as good as Pan’s Labyrinth…
4.) Who is the last character to die in the 1968 George Romero film Night of the Living Dead? Miss, though we did pick a character from the movie.
5.) Which East Coast U.S. state is the setting for the 1999 film The Blair Witch Project? I initially had the right guess, but (ahem) – someone talked me out of it. First sign of things going amiss in our trivia horror film!

6.) In the 1996 film Scream, how does Sidney kill Matthew Lillard’s character Stu? For some reason, we thought she used the garage door to dispatch him. Maybe that was another horror movie? Ah yes. Scary Movie!
7.) At the conclusion of Get Out, Chris believes he is about to be apprehended by the police, but instead is saved by his friend Rod, who works for what agency?
8.) In the 1982 film Poltergeist, where is the location of the portal through which Carol Anne is sucked into the demon’s dimension? This time, Mike had the right guess, but (ahem), someone talked him out of it…”Don’t overthink it,.” Yeah…you can see where this game was headed!
9.) What is the first name of the terrifying girl who crawls out of the television in the 2002 film The Ring?
10.) What 2002 film begins with animal liberation activists breaking into a research lab to free captive chimpanzees who are infected with a highly contagious virus called “Rage”? Picked a similar movie, not the right one.

Mystery – Ending quotes
Identify the horror films with the following last words:
1. “Why, she wouldn’t even harm a fly…”
2. “And crawling on the planet’s face, some insects called the human race. Lost in time and lost in space… and meaning.”
3. “Most people are so ungrateful to be alive. But not you. Not anymore. Game over.”
4. “This is Ripley…executive officer, last survivor of the commercial starship Nostromo signing off. Come on cat.”
Missed 2 and 3.
Final Category – Subtitles
FQ: Six films in the Halloween film series have titles that also include a subtitle.
Give the complete subtitle to five of those six films.
Came up with three correct answers…not enough.
Oh well…it’s more fun to watch horror films than to be quizzed about them! 🙂
