Sporcle’s “Triviacon” 2020 Postponed…

The upcoming trivia tournament that was scheduled in Las Vegas by the Sporcle trivia company has been postponed because of COVID-19 concerns. Here’s what they have to say on their web site:

On November 29, 2017, we here at Sporcle decided to host the first ever TriviaCon, scheduling it for April 2020. We’ve been working on putting together this event ever since. We felt the event we were creating was going to be epic, unique, fun, inclusive… and the first of many. On that day in November 2017, we created two rules: #1 – Don’t embarrass ourselves, and #2 – Do the first TriviaCon so well that having the second TriviaCon was a no-brainer.

Knowing what is happening in the world today with COVID-19, we can no longer put on an event that meets those goals. The health and safety of everyone attending TriviaCon are of the utmost importance to us. So, we have decided to postpone TriviaCon 2020.

As a trivia company, our job is to have answers. Admittedly, there are many answers we don’t have at this very moment, but we’ve considered many factors in making this decision. 97% of the attendees coming to TriviaCon are traveling from other states. Seattle is the city sending the most people by more than a 2:1 margin over the next city, and it’s one of the hardest-hit areas in the country. About 20% of our volunteer staff, including several people who are integral to the event taking place, would be coming from Seattle, Boston, New York, and other profoundly impacted areas. We’ve had volunteers excuse themselves during the course of this past week, and some attendees have asked for full refunds (which we happily obliged).

We realize this impacts everyone on a personal and financial level, and for that, we are genuinely devastated. No matter how heartbroken we are over this, prioritizing the health and safety of the trivia community is what truly matters.

We have been negotiating multiple times per day with the Rio/Caesars Entertainment about rescheduling our event. We absolutely plan on having those dates released in the coming days. Unfortunately, there are a lot of moving pieces in that decision for them. We didn’t feel it was right to hold this message back any longer while waiting for those dates. We’re committed to making this mentally stimulating weekend happen, so we genuinely hope to see every one of you soon. We will offer full refunds to those of you who can’t make it that weekend or who would prefer to decide at a later date. Please stay tuned for more details to follow as soon as possible from triviacon@sporcle.com.

While this decision may be met with differing opinions, we’ll be able to sleep tonight knowing that we’re making a decision that is not financially motivated, but instead, one that is in the best interest of the health of everyone. Thank you for your understanding and patience as we work through this unprecedented situation. Please take care of yourselves, and Sporcle on.
