Several years ago, there was a brief time when the Prince song Alphabet St. played in the “rotation” at work (I work in Retailville). And I LOVED IT EVERY TIME IT WAS ON.

Alphbet St. was on Prince’s 1988 Lovesexy album, which was recorded in a seven-week period at his new Paisley Park Studios. I’m not sharing an image of the album cover because well…Prince is naked on it!
Someone must’ve complained or gotten wise to the lyrics, which are, because it’s a PRINCE SONG, quite racy (though tame in comparison to some of his other songs). Here’s a taste:
Excuse me, baby
I don’t mean to be rude
But I guess tonight I’m just not, I’m just not in the mood
So if you don’t mind (yeah, yeah, yeah)
I would like to watch
I remember the song was in the rotation during the “back to school” time in August, so I think someone must’ve been hoodwinked by the song’s title.
Here’s how I imagine this went down in this clueless person’s head:
Oooh, Alphabet St.! That’a a perfect song for back to school shopping!
I guess if you don’t know the song, yeah – what better song to make you think of learning than Alphabet St.? You can’t make words without learning the alphabet first! While sexually charged lyrics are commonly found in Prince songs, not EVERY one of his songs was about sex!
