Fact Du Jour – July 8, 2019 – Tennessee’s Mount LeConte – Keep An Eye Out For Llamas!

Rental cabins on Mount LeConte, Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee.

Want an overnight getaway that will take you to the highest point in the Eastern United States? Are you in good enough shape to haul your gear – and your bad self – up the slopes of a 6,593-foot high mountain (Tennessee’s third highest, and the highest located entirely in Tennessee)? Have you been thinking of joining the “mile high club,” but don’t like the idea of cramped sex in an airplane bathroom? If you said “yes” to all of these things, you might want to put Mount LeConte on your travel “bucket list!” I’ve never summited this peak or visited the lodge itself, though I did hike a portion of the trail leading to its summit in 2005.

The most interesting fact about Mount LeConte – to me – is that the lodge gear (laundry, food, etc). – is hauled up the slope by… llamas! Horses were previously used, but did too much damage to the trails compared to llamas, which have more “padded” feet. They are apparently a popular tourist attraction, too!

What would the cast members of Monty Python say to that?
