My Way of Saying “F— You” To Trivia “Megateams?”

The past two Wednesday nights, my husband and I have gone to the “Corner Brewery” in Ypsilanti, MI and met with another friend – while trivia is going on in the “other room.” We used to be among the teams playing every Wednesday at this bar, but hung it up because we just don’t have enough players who can play this show every week. That, and my husband and I don’t really dig having to get a table an hour before game time!

When I get up to use the bathroom, I’ll still poke my head into the “trivia room” and see the questions on the big pull-down screen – and always try to look at the final questions (usually we leave before the game two questions get shown on screen).

Last Wednesday, I spotted a “duo” sitting at a table near the door, and thought I’d try helping them with the final question. After all, they were just a two-person trivia team in a room full of “megateams.” I’d say the “average” team size on Wednesdays at Corner is about six players. It’s not uncommon to see a dozen players huddled around one table. But it’s far less common to see  “two players versus the world” in this trivia spot.

Which is why I was drawn to them!

The question I helped them answer last week was:

What singer attended Erasmus Hall High School with Barbra Streisand, where they performed together in choir about 20 years before they reached #1 together on the Billboard Hot 100?

Last night’s question I helped them with was this one:

Awards given annually since 1987 by the Horror Writers Association in a number of categories, and won by many authors, including Stephen King, Anne Rice, Dean Koontz, and J.K. Rowling, are named for what Irish author who lived from 1847-1912?

It’s almost tempting to ask if these players (named Jennifer and Mike) would let me sit with them on trivia nights! But then…that sounds kind of like a “commitment,” which is something I’m trying to avoid these days! Still interesting to think about ways I could help an itty-bitty trivia team say “f— you” to the other 10-12 person trivia teams – by beating them!

You may say that I’m a dreamer…but I’m not the only one…
