Editor’s note: Recap of July, 2014 game at Powell’s Pub as reported upon by More Beer Less Pants. Does our team have a “sixth man?” Well, we do for Sporcle games, but not really for MTL games! Usually, it’s just Mike and I playing at Powell’s, but occasionally Brad will join in on the fun. My attempts to answer these questions will be denoted in this color.
Our “6th Man” came off the bench Monday night for the second week in a row of MTL at Powell’s Pub. Pretty soon, the competition is going to call a foul on us for illegal substitution since we dominated the place again.
Here are the questions, as I remember them:
1)The nickname for the area in the Atlantic Ocean where planes and ships are said to have disappeared?
2)Who is the only pitcher in MLB history with more than 500 career wins?
Not my category…
3)What are the 4 observable states of matter?
Solid, liquid, gas, plasma?
4)What country is home to Port wine?
5)What is the only marsupial native to the US?
6)What was the name of the second city to have an atomic bom dropped on Japan?
Husband says Nagasaki (I’m not as good with this stuff)
7)Bonus – what was the name of the B-29 bomber that dropped the 2nd atomic bomb on Japan? No clue.
8)What 1990’s cop drama was subtitled “___ :Life on the Streets”?
Wow, a “doctor cop lawyer” question I know the answer to (homicide)!
Family Guy parody of this show…
9)What was Elvis’ middle name?
10)Detectives Comics #27, from 1939, marked the first appearance of what super hero?
Another coin toss! I’m going to say Batman.
Going into halftime, we had a perfect game going. Then this set of questions came along at halftime:
Besides “Rainman”, name 4 of the remaining 6 films that Dustin Hoffman was nominated for an acting Academy Award (Best Actor or Supporting Actor)?
Lucky for us, our 6th man is a film buff, oh… and this question was a “repeat” of a Sporcle Live question from about 4-6 weeks ago. How that happens, I’ll never know, but I’ll take the free answers!
The Graduate, Kramer vs. Kramer, Midnight Cowboy, Wag the Dog…
After halftime, we were still riding a perfect game and holding a 3 point lead.
11)What year was Monopoly first released: 1925, 35, 45 or 05? (newsletter clue)
12)What Arthur Golden novel was made into a film in 2005, and is about a Japanese girl named Sayuri?
Memoirs of a Geisha? Where would a Geisha fall on the D&D “harlot chart?” I’m guessing “haughty courtesan,” lol…
13)Country singer Keith Urban married what actress in 2006?
Nicole Kidman (I think…)
14)From the Three Stooges, what was Larry’s last name?
15)What is the first names the two presidents that share a last name with a Beatle?
William and Benjamin.
16)What is the name of the band fronted by Richard Cheese, which is a parody of the band name “Rage Against the Machine”?
This was our first hiccup of the game. One team got this one right, out of the 13 teams playing. So it didn’t hurt that badly. Wanna guess in what part of the bar that team was sitting?
17)How many chambers are there in the human heart?
18)In finance, the letters CD are an abbreviation for what?
Certificate of deposit.
19)What is the 2-word term for when two horses finish a race in a tie?
This is something Brad (aka our “Sixth Man” in MTL games) might know…
We really should have gotten this one, but lately we’ve been flubbing the last regular question. I blame the free beer.
Going into the final, were still leading by 3 points, although to a different team. I’m guessing it was the Richard Cheese question that allowed them to gain ground. But it didn’t matter, because the final question fell right into one of our many areas of expertise: TV Ratings
American Idol was the top rated TV show for 8 years, from 2003-2011. What show surpassed American Idol in the ratings, and has held the top spot since the 2011/12 season?
America’s got Talent? No idea on these kinds of questions…
Another game done, and another night of free beer is on the way.
