Editor’s note: This is a game recap written by the More Beer Less Pants team. My guesses will be indicated in this color.
More Beer Less Pants
Our streak of nights winning a gift certificate at Powell’s has ended. We made a valiant effort, but came up short on a weird final question.
1)Comedian Joan Alexandra Milensky is better known by what stage name? Joan Rivers.
2)What was Miley Cyrus’ first Billboard Hot 100 #1 hit? (OMG a pop culture question from this century? In MTL?)
Bonus – Name the song that she took to #2 on the Hot 100?
None of our old “fogeys” would know this, but Evan might (but he never comes out for MTL games).
3)Which president said, “For years, politicians have been promising the moon. I’m the first to deliver.”? Johnson?
4)On which continent will you find the Sahara desert? Yes, this was a question. duh
5)The Boeing 747 entered commercial service in 1970 flown by what US airline? I’m guessing Pan Am.
6)Which huge planet in our solar system is 5th from the Sun? Ugh… really?!?
Bonus – Within 1 year, when was Pluto demoted to a dwarf planet?
Duh on #1, my husband says 2007 for bonus.
7)On what day of the week is the MLB All-Star Game played? Not my category.
8)What small New England state’s motto is “Hope”? Rhode Island? Does it hope to be grown up someday?
9)What squishy substance did James Wright accidentally invent in 1943, that later became a children’s toy?
Halftime – Earth Science
Name 4 of the 5 atmospheric layers on Earth, that are determined by changes in temperature associated with altitude..
stratosphere, troposphere, ionosphere were my husband’s guesses.
10)Newsletter – How long in Earth years is a cosmic year? This is the time that it takes our solar system to orbit the Milky Way.
11)What major charity, based in the UK with a vision of a poverty free world, uses a clown’s red nose as their symbol? (This was tough, we didn’t know this is considered a British charity).
I’m guessing Salvation Army.
12)What country singer starred as Buck Bonham in the 1980 film “Honeysuckle Rose”? (This one must have been to make up for the Miley Cyrus question earlier) Ha, we had a similar question about this in our December, 2016 MTL finals which my husband knew for some strange reason…Kris Kristofferson?
13)Which re-occurring villain appeared the most times on the original Batman TV series? My guess is Joker.
14)What is the main chemical element added to iron to increase the hardness and make steel? No clue, would have to defer to more “sciency” folks on my team for this.
15)What major US city, once in Indian territory known as Ft. Dearborn, was the site of a battle during the War of 1812? No clue.
16)During Abbott & Costello’s “Who’s on First” skit, which position is not mentioned? This is a Bradagory…
17)How many state capitals start with the same letter as their state? Wow, this is rough, the only two I can think of are Oklahoma City and Indianapolis.
18)Which female US athlete won 3 gold and 1 silver medal at the 1988 Summer Olympics? Not really my category…but someone on my team likely to know it.
Going into the final, we were ahead of the pack with a 1-point lead. Then the wheels came off with this VERY wordy final question about Jeopardy:
Assuming one person could sweep both rounds of Jeopardy, and find all daily doubles in the top tier, then wager everything in Final Jeopardy and get it correct, within 100,000 how much could you win?
Being able to read this to yourself is a bit different than having someone read it out loud, twice, in a crowded bar. So the question seems very simple now. But basically, the question should have read: What is the maximum possible score you can get in Jeopardy?
The first song was over before that part was clear, leaving us the second song to do the math. Being rushed, we forgot to double it with the Final Jeopardy wager. Oops. Two teams got it right, the rest either wagered zero or got it wrong.
Oh well, losing this week my lull them into a false sense of security. We’ll just have to put them back in place next time.
No idea on that final!
