I’ve been spending quite a bit of time on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources web site over the past couple of days and attempting (without success) to book our next cabin adventures. My password wasn’t working Saturday, and when I put in a request to have a link e-mailed to me so I could change my password? Crickets. No response. And because Monday is likely a holiday because of Martin Luther King’s birthday, I’m not likely to get any technical issues resolved before Tuesday (though I did send an e-mail earlier today).
It’s been a tough decision! We’ve been specifically eyeing parks we’ve either never visited or only seldom visited in the past – or haven’t visited in a long, long time. And we’ve rented cabins and visited campgrounds all over the state of Michigan. Even in the Upper Peninsula! We’ve rented cabins a couple of times in the Porcupine Mountains State Park (which require a hike over miles of trails to visit).
And there are cabins not too far from where we live which have become favorite haunts!

Me playing some corn hole by one of the rustic cabins at Brighton State Recreation Area in April, 2018.
I already knew that you can rent rustic and modern cabins in Michigan State parks. Today, I discovered – almost by accident – that some of the state parks also rent pop-up campers! My husband said his family had one of these things when he was a kid, so we’re definitely going to try renting one of these for a weekend! I’ve never camped in anything but tents – and in my in-laws’ RV – I’ve never spent a night in a pop-up camper. I think it will be kind of fun!

I like the idea of not having to sleep on the ground! It certainly doesn’t get any easier to sleep on the ground as you get older…and it certainly doesn’t get any easier getting UP from the ground when nature calls!
A blog I posted in May, 2018 about a cabin trip to Cheboygan State Park has become one of my most popular blogs with 92 all-time views. Sadly, the Cheboygan cabins have already booked up quickly for the dates we want to go, but if nothing else – this gives us a chance to explore new options!
I also discovered that there’s a solar-powered cabin for rental at a park in the Manistee area (the interior lights are solar powered). I was very, very interested in this cabin, until I saw that the bunks looked like they could be a bit…cramped. I’m a tall person, and I can clearly see that I’m not going to be able to stretch out in those beds! I still would be very interested in at least checking out the campground when the weather warms up.
I’ll be sure to keep you all in the loop about any upcoming cabin adventures! Once I iron out these “technical difficulties…”
