A Red, White, Blue, and… Independence Trivia Quiz!

Happy Fourth of July everyone! If you live in the United States, it’s a national holiday today, and many cities are marking the occasion with parades or fireworks displays. People may be marking the occasion by having barbecues/picnics, or drinking themselves silly and, possibly, attempting to read the full text of The Declaration of Independence. To start off, I’m marking the occasion by writing this trivia quiz about people, places and things that are red, white, and blue (or any combination thereof) and about independence! Have fun…


  1. Team Names – Which team in the FIFA World Cup uses the nickname “Red Devils?” Hint: they have not yet been eliminated (as of July 4, 2018).
  2. Movies – Which 1985 film received two Oscar nominations for best original song, with one of them winning that Oscar? Bonus, name either of those songs.
  3. Countries – Which African nation gained its independence from the United Kingdom on March 12, 1968? Hint: it is an island nation.
  4. ’80s Movies – Name one of the two highest-grossing films (domestic box office)  released in 1980 with the word “blue” in their titles. Both movies were among the top 10 highest-grossing films that year. Name both for an extra point.
  5. ’90s Movies – In what 1999 film do Michelle Williams and Kirsten Dunst cut up an American flag to make articles of clothing? See photo above…
  6. Broadway – What Cole Porter musical debuted on Broadway in 1936 and starred Ethel Merman and Bob Hope?
  7. Mascots – What NCAA Div.  1 college’s mascot is the Blue Devils?
  8. ’80s Movies – The song “I Just Called to Say I Love You” by Stevie Wonder won the Oscar for best original song. In what 1984 movie was this song used?
  9. Book Characters – Carrie White is a main character in a horror novel by what writer?
  10. Composers – Which composer wrote the march “Stars and Stripes Forever?”
