We visited our third Sporcle Live venue tournament of the week Sunday at the YpsiAlehouse, just as a final “get together” for the team rather than trying for a tournament spot. With nothing on the line except possible gift cards – myself (Heather), Mike, Brad, and John threw our hats in the ring on a chilly Sunday evening, for a game hosted by Sporcle and Shine with Emily. We were involved in a double tiebreaker after game one with team Teamy McTeamface and lost on the second tiebreaker, still managing a $10 gift card win
😦 We were also sunk by the final question in game two, so had we been trying to “qualify,” we would have failed! Shout out to Izzy and the Peeps for taking the venue winner spot this time, and advancing to the league championship Dec. 3. Also shout out to Brad, whom we are naming MVP of this particular game! He was so on the spot with his answers, that he could have easily held his own playing it solo! Though he never, ever will. He’s far too much of a “social animal.” We’ll forgive him! And the questions…

Game One
1. Beverages – When it was first introduced in the 1960s, Gatorade was only available in which flavor? Anyone else ever pass out from heat exhaustion at an Ohio theme park on a 114-degree day and have to drink this stuff in the park’s first aid area back in the ’80s? No? Just me?
🙂 Brad and I teamed up for 3.
2. Movie Characters – In what 1998 film did Adam Sandler play a character named Bobby Boucher? For “nerd” bonus, in what state was this film set? Brad all over this for 10 and the bonus. Thank you for knowing an Adam Sandler answer, Brad!
3. Friends – What is the name of Ross’ first wife and the mother of his son, Ben? Nope, miss for 1.
4. Companies – What Delaware based chemical company was originally founded in 1802 as a gunpowder mill by a French immigrant? Brad again for 9.
5. Book Characters – Holly Golightly is a character in a 1958 work by what author? Brad (and I) again for 8.
6. Tennis – What two professional grand slam tournaments are played on “hard” surfaces? Brad worked a bit on this but got it for 4.
7. Song Lyrics – In the lyrics to “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred, what animal does he claim to be too sexy for? Mike, Brad and John for the points, I just don’t know that song that well, other than he claimed he was so sexy it hurt…5
8. Pledges – In what decade were the words “under God” added to the Pledge of Allegiance? Brad for 7.
9. Colonies – Until 1960, the current West African nations of Senegal, Mali and Togo (among others) were colonies of what European country? My first solo hit for 6.
10. Numbers – In Roman numerals, what is the first number that uses the letter X twice? My nerdy team all over this for 4.
Mystery – Name the movie given the following “clue” words
1. Close, Richard, Steven
2. North, Cary, Alfred
3. Million, Hillary, Clint
4. Who’s, Elizabeth, Mike
Got them all
Standings: Sixteen (I think…) teams ,scores 44 to 67, with Teamy McTeamface in first. We were right behind them with 66 points (curse that “Friends” question!!!).
Final Category – Metric System
The first four prefixes in the metric system are, in order, Zepto, Atto, Femto and Pico – name the next two in the series.
Got it, wagered 20. Teamy wagered 19, so tiebreaker time:
Tiebreaker 1: When written in Roman Numerals, how many letters are there in 7,716? And both teams nailed it, so..
Tiebreaker 2: In what year did the Minnesota Viking play their first game? Teamy nailed this, we were off by five years. We won a $10 gift card. With the league points added, in, this put us in second behind Teamy, who had 101, with 96 points.
Game Two
1. Video Games – Other than Mario and Luigi, what are the only playable characters in Super Mario Brothers? Miss for 2, though we considered the right character.
2. NFL Receivers – Isaac Bruce and Terry Holt are the only two leading receivers in the history of what NFL franchise? Brad for 10.
3. Music Terms – What nine-letter word describes a gradual increase in volume? One time at band camp…me for 9
4. Superheroes – Marvel Comics character and X-Men character Bobby Drake is better known by what moniker? Not going to get by my “nerdy” crew (though I would have struggled a bit with it), 8
5. Weather – In what month does the Atlantic hurricane season officially begin? One month off, miss for 3.
6. City Names – What Nebraska city has a name that is derived from Sioux and means “dwellers on the bluff?” Brad for 7
7. James Bond – What is the most recently released Bond film featuring a one-word title? Brad made me write down every Bond movie I could think of when this category was announced. Turned out the list wasn’t necessary…6
8. Manufacturing – According to its web site, what American company is the world’s leading manufacturer, installer and maintainer of elevators, escalators and moving walkways? 5
9. Short Lived TV – Name 1/2 actresses who appeared on short lived NBC sitcom Kath and Kate. Nerd bonus, name both actresses. Miss for 1.

Mystery – Landlocked Countries – Identify the landlocked country from the following choices:
1. Colombia, Bolivia, Uruguay
2 Belarus, Croatia, Estonia
3. Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia
4. Laos, Bangladesh, Pakistan
Got them all. There was a team challenging #3, claiming that Sudan was landlocked, and that went on for a few minutes until they were satisfied that no, it’s not landlocked…
Standings; 16 teams, scores 8 to 59, with Teamy and Snow Spiders tied for first. We were in second tied with team Pandemonium with 57 points.
Final Category – Album and Movie Titles
What word, when singular, is the title of a 1979 studio album by Cher and when plural, a 2013 thriller film starring Hugh Jackman? We wagered 20 and missed.
The top qualifying team was Izzy with 156. Until next season…we’re not making any specific trivia plans, but some of you will surely see us around! As always, Go Pods!
