Trivia Recap – Jan. 30, 2017 – YpsiAlehouse

A couple of ‘Pods visited the YpsiAlehouse Sunday afternoon for a trivia fix, won no prizes, but finished in third overall. Maybe it’s the fact that this trivia spot is kitty corner from a “gentleman’s club.” This always makes us want to do a “racy” alternate team name, which in this case we chose “It’s Always Sunny on Whore Island.” After host Sporcle and Shine with Emily read our name aloud, another team asked to see who we were. Yup, that’s us! On Father’s Day weekend in 2016, we used the name “It’s Daddy-daughter day at Deja Vu.” It wasn’t exactly an ideal round of questions for just the two of us, but we held our own fairly well! Shout out to Teamy McTeamface for taking a first place “sweep” in both games! On to the questions, which myself (Heather) and Mike attempted to answer (some of them successfully, lol)…
Game One
1. First Names – What first name is shared by the mayor of Toronto from 2010 to 2014, the first name of two of O.J. Simpson’s defense attorneys and the first name of a character created by writer Dan Brown? 10
2. Classic Movies – In the classic film “The Wizard of Oz,” who turns back the curtain, revealing the wizard as a charlatan? 9
3. U.S. Cities – Name one of the two U.S. cities beginning with the letter “O” that are the most populous in their respective states. Name both for an extra “nerd” point, got both for 8.
4. Comedians – What actor/comedian played Tom Haverford on “Parks and Recreation?” 7
5. Presidents – Following Herbert Hoover, who served 1929-1933, who was the next president to serve only one complete term? 6
6. NHL Players – Jan January, 2017, who became first former player to have his number retired by the Tampa Bay Lightning? Miss for 1.
7. Composers – “God Bless America,” “White Christmas” and “There’s No Business Like Show Business” were all written by what Russian-born composer-lyricist? The “Russian” qualifier tripped me up…brain fart for 2, though I remembered his name after we handed in our slip (d’oh!).
8. Subtitles – The fourth, sixth and eighth installments of “Call of Duty” have what two-word subtitle? Nope, miss for 3.
9. CEOs – Meg Whitman was CEO of what company from 1998-2005 before becoming CEO of Hewlett-Packard? Miss for 4.
10. Trees – Olea Europaea, commonly found in the Mediterranean region, is a species of tree better known by what name? 5
Mystery – What was searched on Google more (either/or). Thanks to Jason from Teamy McTeamface for lending us a quarter to help us with the one we were stumped on (the coin didn’t steer us wrong, lol)>
1. Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump
2. Westworld or Stranger Things
3. Deadpool or Suicide Squad
4. Royal Rumble or World Series
Flipped a coin (literally) on #4 and got it. Missed #3, our “train wreck” logic failed us here…
Scores: Eleven teams, scores 48 to 63, with Teamy McTeamface and Annie’s College Fund tied for first. We were in fifth with 56 points.
Final Category – ’80s Music Rumors
What song was recorded by Billy Idol for his 2001 Greatest Hits album, 16 years after it was originally recorded by a band for a John Hughes-directed film? Rumors long persisted that Idol had turned down an opportunity to record the song originally.
A bit of discussion, but got it…but so did enough teams ahead of us to shut us out of money…
Final standings: Quiz in my Pants, 81; Teamy McTeamface, 83.
Game Two
1. 2012 in Music – what boy band had two of the five best-selling albums in the U.S. in 2012? Good guess for 2.
2. Wonders – What New York City landmark, opened in 1931, was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and was named one of the wonders of the modern world by the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1994? Why, oh why did we not re-rack this? Miss for 4.
3. Movie Quotes – What 2010 movie starring Leonardo di Caprio has him delivering this line – “Which would be worse – to live as a monster – or die as a good man?” 10
4. Olympic Sports (this category scared us a bit at first since we didn’t have Brad with us) – Name one of the two styles of wrelsting that are included in the Summer Olympics program? Mike got one correct one, but not both…9
5. Geography Terms – What is the geographic term for a narrow strip of land that connects two larger land masses, usually with water on either side? 8
6. Novelty Songs – Audio clue of 1976 song featuring an animal-inspired name. Cocaine was a hell of a drug…got this for 6.
7. Reality TV – From 2004 to 2012, “Dog the Bounty Hunter” appeared on what cable TV network? Miss for 1, though we considered the right one.
8. Months of the Year – Which month of the year was officially declared LGBT month in the U.S.? Miss for SIX. This game ain’t looking so good!
9. Medical Terms – What medical term derived from Latin describes a ringing of the ears that can only be heard by one person?
10. Novels – What classic 1945 novel ends with the following line – “The creatures outside looked from pig to man and from man to pig?” There was a bit more to this quote given, got this for 3.
Visual Mystery – Guess how we did on this round? Go ahead…don’t be shy! Yup…you were right! ZERO FUCKING POINTS. Justifiable profanity here…
Standings – Eleven teams, scores 39 to 63, with Teamy McTeamface in first. We were in ninth with 47 points. That “wonders” question worked wonders on our scores…ugh.
Final Category – Unique Honors
American Glenn Seaborg and Russian Yuri Oganessian are the only two people in history to have what distinction bestowed upon them during their lifetimes?
Nope…game winners Soft Five and Teamy McTeamface.
Until next time…our next “official” outing will be Thursday at Stick’s. We are taking this week off from our regular game at the Wurst Bar hosted by Stacy. We will be back at Wurst next week (with one player down). We’ll provide recaps of any games we play in between now and then! As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Dog the Bounty Hunter! Or not, reality TV is much more interesting if the characters aren’t classy, isn’t it?
