Trivia Recap – October 20, 2026 – McShane’s Pub – My Trivia Live – Ypsilanti, MI

We couldn’t fight off the allure of having a cheap bar night on a recent Tuesday, so we took some previous trivia prize winnings to one of our favorite local trivia “haunts,” aka McShane’s Pub.

Competition has been lighter here on Tuesdays as of late. As always, we just shrug that off and say “Meh – more for us then!”

We wound up winning a third place/$10 prize.

Here were our abbreviated questions:

Round One

Alcohol – In which state is Jim Beam brand of bourbon produced in?

The previous week, there was a team of two playing under the name “For the Love of Bourbon.” The same two were not present at this game. Maybe they were enjoying bourbon or recovering from its after effects 🤔? I have no idea! 🥃 🥃😆

Fictional Places – What island created by writer JM Barrie is home to Peter Pan and the Lost Boys?

Motorways – Abbreviated BAB, the Bundesbahn is a federal motorway in what country?

Round Two

Song Titles – What compound word describing a symphony makes up the title of a 1997 song by the Verve?

My husband Mike and I call this the “Turn Signal Song.” We had what was (I think), a 1992 Ford Escort that, in addition to the very annoying automatic seat belts that even dedicated seat belt wearers like myself absolutely loathed – a turn signal that for some reason synched perfectly with the beat of this song. That might be the only thing that we miss about this car. Besides the sunroof! We replaced this car with a far better Escort that we still wax sentimental about today – our 1999 black Escort that we called “Little Guy.” He was a champ that sipped gasoline like fine bourbon!

Oh yeah this band also got sued by the Rolling Stones because of the song’s similarities to the Stone’s song “The Last Time.”

Same Name – What five-letter word describes both a window covering and the way a garment hangs?

Typing – Which row of keys on a QWERTY keyboard is called the “home row?”

Round Three

Geography – What third largest island in the world is home to three countries? We were in the right geographic area, but nope, miss.

Adaptations – Adapted into a Broadway play, The Miracle Worker is based on an autobiography of what notable American?

We debated whether the book was about the teacher or the student, but thankfully we didn’t overthink.

Toys – What digital “pet” whose name translates to “egg watch” was launched by Bandei in 1996?

All of those teachers at the time complaining about how distracting they were – wait til they would get a load of…cell phones!

Halftime – Pearls of Knowledge

Identify the following things that have to do with various “Pearls.”

H1 Ship in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise occasionally captained by Jack Sparrow

H2 Painter of Girl with the Pearl Earring

H3 Author who won Pulitizer Prize for The Good Earth

H4 US state where Pearl Harbor is located

Missed #2 and #3. Sadly we are almost always hit or miss on painters questions. And to be fair…there were an awful lot of Dutch painters besides Rembrandt and VanGogh!

Halftime scores:

Rather Be At, 28; Maddie Platters, 29; Pods (us), 30; We Were Never Here, 33; Lab Geeks, 34; King Cobra, 36.

Round Four

Biographies – A 2024 biography titled Wild Things is about what Post-Impressionist painter who left Tahiti to spend his last days in the Marquesas Islands? When I said hit or miss on painters earlier…I wasn’t kidding. This was a hit! 😁

Name Dropping – How many times is the name “Tiffany” mentioned in the song “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” in the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes? We used our “Answer of the Week” freebie to get out of answering this correctly.

Science – What is the SI unit used to measure? Miss.

Round Five

Mascots – What comic character created in 1902 was adopted as a mascot for the Brown Shoe Company? He had a sister Mary Jane (who had nothing to do with marijuana).

Characters – What renowned mime was known for playing the character “Bip?” Raise your hands if you’re like me and that this was literally the only mime you know by name.

Classic Cinema – What 1931 Peter Lorre film was considered by Fritz Lang to be his magnum opus? I guess I wasn’t the only person in the room saying “Never heard of this.”

Round Six

Movies – What genre of movies is Blumhouse known for making?

Waterways – What canal connects Lake Ontario to Lake Erie through the Niagara Peninsula? Miss. Clearly we do not know New York geography “well” enough.

Monuments – How many US presidents are displayed on Mount Rushmore? We were sitting right next to a guy at another table who said aloud that there needs to be a current president added to Mount Rushmore. We… disagreed. 😫

Scores heading into the final:

League, 40; Lab Geeks, 54; Pods, 56; Rather Be, 58; Maddie Platters, 61 (not a bad score for a lone wolf abandoned by his pack); We Were Never Here, 63 and King Cobra, 68.

Final Category – Baby Names

As listed in the 2025 Social Security Index, what #81 ranked baby name is the most popular baby name sharing a name with a calendar month?

We didn’t get it correct but wagered low. But ended up just high enough to win third place!

Scores: Pods, 56, Rather Be At, 113; We Were Never Here, 125.

This may or may not conclude our trivial pursuits for the week. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Pearl Buck!
