Trivia Recap – May 21, 2026 – McShane’s Pub – My Trivia Live – Ypsilanti, MI

We decided that our regular Tuesday trivia meetup was just not gonna happen , so we did a “make up” game on a lovely recent Thursday evening.

It was just the two of us waging trivia battle, so I guess it was fitting that we won a second place prize for the second week in a row. The team that won first was a non-regular team that wound up moving from last to first by being the only team to get the final question correct. Don’t you just love it when these “underdog” things happen in trivia?

Did anyone else view Cobra Kai as a comedy? Was it just me to occasionally have to step back mentally and ask myself WTF we were actually watching? I mean, it’s really just supposed to be about kids’ karate, isn’t it? Not exactly fate of the world stuff like they make it out to be, right?

I overheard a little bragging from the team that had won first the week before, so…maybe that ignited my competitive streak a bit! It’s all in good fun! Yes it’s great when you win first place in trivia, we all love doing that when we can. But as Rachel Dawes told her boyfriend and future Two-Face villain Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, if other people aren’t shooting at you, then you’re not doing your job right!

In trivia parlance, that means that you need those other teams to keep ya on your toes!

Here were our very, very abbreviated questions:

Round One

Government – What cabinet department has the final say on whose faces appear on currency?

Friends – What is Chandler’s last name on the sitcom Friends?

Animal Kingdom – What tall mammal, though not normally known for making noises, actually does have vocal chords – using them only rarely?

The Toledo Zoo has several of these tall mammals, one of them born around the beginning of 2026 is named Eugene. So named because he has kind of a “nerdy” look, with a shock of dark hair on top of his head. Mental note – visit this zoo sometime this year to see how this guy is growing up! He probably has horn rimmed glasses and has started playing D&D  by now!

Round Two

Science – What is the hardest known mineral on the Moh’s Scale?

TV Settings – What Netflix series debuting in 2016 is set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana?

Zodiac – What zodiac sign is represented by twins? I’ve known quite a few people of this sign quite well during my life. Some of them truly do have… dual personalities!

Round Three

Classic Comedy – In the Abbott and Costello “Who’s on First?” comedy bit, which baseball position was represented by “I don’t know?”

Authors – Who wrote the

Vampire Chronicles, which includes Interview with the Vampire?

Medical Terms – What is the medical term for bad breath?

Halftime

“Stuck” Songs

What’s your soundtrack choice for this movie scene?

Given the release years and song titles, identify the artists recording songs with the word “Stuck” in the titles.

H1 1986, Stuck With You

H2 1973, Stuck in the Middle With You

H3 1984, Stuck on You

H4 2010, Stuck Like Glue

Got all of these for 10 points! Funny, I read a story about the #2 song hours before the game. I guess the band wrote the song about an awkward dinner and drinks thing where they actually were seated between record executive people who drove them to madness with boredom! We’ve all been there, right? I mean, maybe we don’t ALL get to sit at a table with record executives, but…maybe co-workers, in-laws, other friends’ friends, other people’s spouses, etc.

Do we all have a “Stuck in the Middle with You” song in us to share? Who are the “clowns” and “jokers” you’ve met in your lives?

Enough of my “Heb Talk!” Let’s get back to showing all of you how we ruined our perfect first half by f—ing up things in the second half, shall we? Isn’t that what you’re all here for? πŸ˜‚

Halftime scores:

Titanic Swim Team, 25; Dorks, Ypsi Starlings Rugby and Keeping up with the Joneses were all tied with 29, Hungarians, 30; Spacecats, 31; Pods, 37.

Round Four

Spices – What is the common name for the spice that has also been called Jamaican Pepper that is derived from the pimenta plant? Miss.

Disney Channel – What future music stars appeared in the 2009 film Princess Protection Program? Miss.

Discoveries – What Scottish scientist discovered the medicinal uses of penicillin in 1928? I was so sure that I knew this, but our confidence was shaken by missing the first two in this round. So we crossed off what would have been the correct answer, and went with our “freebie” answer instead. Bollocks! Second week in a row that we’d do this…

The things we do to avoid six point misses! Letterman had “Stupid Pet Tricks,” meet “Dumb Trivia Player Tricks!”

Round Five

Family Homes – In what U.S. president did Abraham Lincoln’s son eventually settle?

Shame on me! I mean – I *try* to be a good collector of trivia about our presidents. Andrew Johnson was a tailor, Chester Arthur loved fancy clothing, Harding had a secret love child, Grover Cleveland married someone far too young for him, yada yada…

I guess I’ll have to try to be better about knowing some more facts about “presidential brats!” Presidential “nepo babies!”

Pardon me while I hastily yet half-assly peruse wiki articles about each of the current president’s children! And Warren Harding’s alleged love child! And Teddy Roosevelt’s scandalous daughter Alice (boy was she fun)!

Veggies – What vegetable, primarily grown in California, has varieties including Globe and  Jerusalem? Just like I read that article about that Stealer’s Wheel song before the game, I actually ate these veggies in a salad before our game! You just never know what pre-game activities might help you know stuff on trivia nights!

Backlash – What is the name of the actress revealed to be AI (created in 2025), which resulted in backlash by the acting community? Never heard of her, we put in “Female Hal 9000” as our guess.

Round Six

Political News – In April 2026, what politician publicly urged King Charles to return the Koh-i-noor diamond to India, but only after speaking to him privately first? Miss.

What’s the guy’s name on the left?

Literary Characters – Who is the loyal companion and best friend to Frodo in the Lord of the Rings book and movie trilogy?

Keyboarding – What is the only vowel on a standard keyboard to not be on the top line?

Scores heading into the final:

Hungarians, 46; Keeping up with the Joneses/Spacecats, 47; Titanic Swim Team, 51; Dorks, 57; Pods, 59 and Ypsi Starlings Rugby, 63.

Final Category – 2025 Films

What 2025 film became the highest-grossing live/animated hybrid film in history, growing $1.038 billion worldwide – and becoming the first Hollywood film to of that year to cross the $1 billion mark?

It it so fitting that the team that brought a baby to the bar was the only one to know this one! You know? That trivia knowledge you have because you have young kids at home? Go them! Well earned!

Hungarians got this correct and finished first with 92 points, we finished second with 59 and Titanic Swim Team finished third with 51.

Our next trivia outing is TBD. We may – or may not – attend the next music quiz game on Memorial Day at Arbor Brewing Company. It all depends on our weekend travel schedule. We do plan to be back at Red Rock Barbecue on Tuesday.

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Selena Gomez and Demi Levato! And also Gerry Rafferty!
