Like a Foreigner song in the late 1970s, we made our best efforts to climb the “charts” at our most recent music quiz game at Ypsi’s Corner Brewery.
Will we ever know what “love is?” If so, we want you to show us!
In the meantime, we’ll just settle for “Double Vision” (#2 in 1978) and “Waiting for a Girl Like You” (#2 in 1981).
What we won’t do – besides “That,” as Meatloaf sang about in pure vaguebook fashion in the early 1990s…
Is “Hot Blooded,” (#3 in 1978) and definitely not “Feels Like the First Time” (#4 in 1977).
Hashtag goals? Squad goals? Or Squid goals since we have a couple of ‘Pods players in the mix every Monday? 🦑
Now that I’ve educated y’all about Foreigner’s highest charting hit songs (groan) …let’s move on to a recap of the recent music quiz game!

First off, we had to engage in a bit of “piracy!” No, not music piracy (that was just some Napster stuff I did in the early 2000s, please don’t tell the FBI or James Hetfield about any of that), but table piracy!
As anyone who plays regular Wednesday trivia nights at Corner Brewery knows, ya gotta show up early to get the table you like!
It’s not quite that cutthroat yet for the Monday music quiz games, but…
My husband Mike and I arrived about a half hour before game time when our usual table was already occupied! I mean…out of about a dozen or so available tables, ours was the only one as the Mexicans would say was “occupado.”
So I decided I’d take the next best table, which was the one that is usually “occupado” by the team calling themselves “Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender.” Which would have been more pirate-like – and fun – had they bothered to show up! 😆
Alas, they may have been at a different bar that night watching the historic U of M NCAA championship victory that inspired couch fires – among other things – in Ann Arbor by giddy revelers.
By the time that the rest of the players showed up, we had a full table – me, Mike, Kim, Amy and Evelyn. There was some great teamwork in some of the questions!
We won a $20/first place prize in game one, finished first overall for the night. We managed to close the “globe points” gap considerably between us and the Baby Sharks team. There are several weeks to go in this season, we’re not planning on giving up anytime soon!
“Never gonna give you up…”
There – you all have been Rick Rolled!

We finished first overall with 115 points, eighth out of all Michigan teams and 23rd out of all teams nationally. This was the 182nd game that we’ve played at the Corner Brewery and our 898th game overall. This is all from the post-game recap that Sporcle sends out to captains every week after games.
For game one, we had questions in the categories of 1980s rock, 2010s pop, 2020s country, one-hit wonders, reggae rock, ’90s girl groups, indie pop and soul.
Here’s a sampling of songs that they played for us to see if we recognized ’em:
Glory Days, Blow, Free Your Mind, Smile, Play that Funky Music and I Feel Good.
Random nerd points we had asked about what instrument was played by Maceo Parker in “I Feel good,” What TV series featured the song “Free Your Mind,” what band did the “Play that Funky Music” artist lose out to as best new artist at the 1977 Grammy Awards.
The band that did win Best New Artist at the 1977 Grammies (don’t correct me, this is how it should be spelled LOL) was the band who recorded that song about afternoon quickies. Which I loved when I was 5. Of course I didn’t have any idea that it was about…🍆 in the afternoon!
The song is still a guilty pleasure for me now! And only because of the acoustic guitar and infectious harmonies (get your minds out of the gutter – I can still enjoy that song on the level of an innocent 5-year-old girl, dammit)!
I don’t usually like to just hand out answers to the music quiz guestions because I’m kinda diabolical and want you to be like James Brown and be the hardest working man in show business!
But yes, that answer is “Afternoon Delight.” The question we had to answer is what band recorded this song that appears on many “Worst Songs Ever Recorded” lists.

We had 57 points heading into the final. Angry Abe’s were right behind us with 53, and ??? Had 53 points and were in third.
Final Question Game One:
Category: Double Threats
Three of the following four artists have had the #1 song on the Billboard Hot 200 while simultaneously starring in the #1 movie at the box office. Name the artist in the following clip who has not accomplished this feat.
We listened to songs by Eminem, Harry Styles, Jennifer Lopez, and Jamie Foxx.
We were not really sure, but we made the right guess and finished first with 70 points – Angry Abe’s finished second with 39, and Better Half finished third with 38.
For game two, we had questions in the categories of Eletcro Pop, 2000s Alt Rock, 1990s Hip-Hop, 1970s #2s (no they didn’t ask about a Foreigner song LOL), Rock Legends, Duos, 2020s Hits, and 2010s Pop.
We missed the “Rock Legends” question, we put Jerry Lee Lewis instead of the correct artist. But we did remember what the name of the bird name inspired walk that he used to do on stage.
For the “Duos” question, we actually had a band nerd nerd point!
This was the question:
What letter completes the four-note sequence that is used in each verse of this song – A, BLANK, D, A?
I made the right guess here.
For those of you playing along at home, I’ll tell ya that song is called “The Look” and is by Roxette. See? I do give out “some” answers in these recaps!
It’s really too bad that Kim’s daughter Molly wasn’t playing with us on this night! Why? Because they played one of her favorite artists, Benson Boone. Kim took her to see Benson Boone live in the summer of 2025. She said she’d do it again this year if he offered any local shows.
Thanks to Kim’s “Kidmosis” (stuff parents know about because of things their kids are into), she knew that the song they played was “Mr. Electric Blue. What we didn’t get right was the nerd point asking which member of Benson Boone’s family was this song about. Our choices were father, brother, uncle or grandfather.
I don’t have the info about the game two final question saved as a slide on my phone or in my notes. But I do know that we didn’t get the question correct and finished fourth.
We’ll be back at it Monday night. Hopefully we’ll arrive early enough to get the table we like indoors, or if the game is played outdoors, we’ll get a nice table in the biergarten!
As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Chuck Berry! Sorry we mistook you for Jerry Lee Lewis!
