So far, it’s not looking great for my trivia team Miskatonic University Fighting Cephalopods (Pods for short) at McShane’s Pub. We’re in last place overall out of the top four non barhop teams that have been playing every week. The top two teams are nearly tied with just one point dividing them.
So far this season, which began the week of April 14, 2025; we’ve played eight total games and have won $55 in prize money.
We’ve played most of our games at McShane’s Pub in Ypsilanti, MI but have played twice at a bar called the Sawmill Saloon in Big Rapids, MI. It just might become our new “trivia home away from home” when we can get out for those games!
We’re not doing great in the standings at McShane’s, where we’ve been playing My Trivia Live games regularly. Logging a low score of 49 points just last night certainly didn’t help matters.
My husband, whom is my right hand man – and dutiful (well, usually anyway 😊) trivia “pardner” and I have decided to not call it quits just yet!
We’ll see how we’re doing in about four weeks or so, when the MTL season will be about halfway finished. At that point, we’ll have the option of maybe finding a Sporcle Events spot to occasionally wage trivia battles when their new season begins in June. Even if just as a “summer fling.” There is a spot called Original Gravity that hosts trivia games on their outside patio on nice nights that a few of my players like to play.
One of my other trusty “trivia comrades” is a teacher and has a more open schedule in the summer months, too.
We’ve waged uphill trivia battles before. And some of those battles have been successful at the end, so that tells me that we should not give up. If we did, we would not be living up to our “Fighting Cephalopods” team name, would we? ✊ 🐙
Heb,
This is Terry with You’re Resume Sucks. I didn’t know how else to reach out to you. We have a new permanent host at Corner Brewery on Wednesday; his name is Ben. He was a Jeopardy Tournament Champion (we looked it up, it’s true, there’s a photo). He knows how to use a microphone, and you can easily understand him, he plays music at a decent level and plays popular oldies. He also walks among the tables during the answering period. It’s no secret we had a team caught cheating last season, (Sporcle caught them with a question) so everyone is aware of that. On the final question, all phones are off the table, he posts/announces it and teams have 2 minutes to discuss it, then he opens up answering for 30 seconds. He is one of the best we’ve had. I know you’ve had concerns with getting there early and having to sit at large tables (valid concerns). But lately, we’ve averaged between 10 and 14 teams with one or two tables open. Just wanted you to know, hope to see you soon.
Which team got caught cheating? I have a guess but still want to know. I don’t have enough players to be able to compete against the giant teams at Corner, but it’s good to know that you have a good host! Thanks for the update.
It was the venue winners last season, Twinkletoes. We think Sporcle caught them with “impossible” questions, one example: during a tie breaker, the question was (and I’m paraphrasing) How many total points did (somewhat famous basketball player) have during the 1976 season. We thought it was a pretty odd/tough question but didn’t think anything about it till they got it right on the nose. There were a couple more times this happened and as other teams grew suspicious, they quit showing up.
Ha it was the team that I thought it was! They have been noticeably absent this season. We played a tiebreaker at Original Gravity last summer where a team called Ryan and the Ladies got the boiling point of platinum on the nose. Believe me, they were NOT a team of scientists! I still don’t trust the team, and the host did nothing about it when I said that answer was too close for comfort. Which is why we’ll only play there occasionally (that and it’s too far of a drive lol). Thanks for the update, feel free to send emails too, I may be quicker to respond than I will be here.
