Since I had a rare Saturday and Sunday off together, my trivia pardner slash husband Mike and I decided to revisit a trivia spot we used to play semi-regularly back before the…you know what. Word that starts with “P?” Happened around 2020? Yeah, that thing!
It was hardly a “triumphant” return by any means! The two of us finished in fourth overall with zero prizes, though we came close to winning one in game two!
As is typical with Sporcle Events games, the mystery rounds are always wild cards. They can be great and be all about the things you know – or they can be about a whole lot of things you know nothing – or very little – about!
I guess you could say the mystery rounds are always good equalizers, if nothing else.
It was still nice to actually be able to get out to this place again! It’s a decent place to play when it’s not packed to the gills with sports nuts! I seem to remember playing there the same night the World Series was going on and the Chicago Cubs wound up being the team winning the series. Which was a big deal since they hadn’t done that in at least a couple of centuries or something 😂
I had no idea there were that many Cubs fans in that area. The things you learn just by going to the bar, right?
On this night, we were able to get a couple of seats at the bar. My husband liked that he had a clear view of Oscar’s outdoor patio and could see outside the front doors, which made him feel like he was less “trapped inside.” When weather gets nice, this guy LOVES to be outdoors! Can’t say that I blame him, the weather Saturday was darn near perfect!
As for our game? Uh, not so perfect!
Game One/Round One
1 TV Voices – On “Family Guy,” who provides the voices for Peter Griffin, Stewie Griffin and Brian the dog?
2 Soft Drinks – Roy Allen and Frank Wright parnered in 1922 to expand what soft drink brand, later opening a chain of restaurants?
3 Fictional Bands – What fictional character is the drummer of the Electric Mayhem, a band that debuted on a 1975 television show?
4 Weather – According to NOAA, what Southern state was the wettest in the contiguous U.S., having reported 71.25 inches of precipitation in 2024?
I think the host Dave said that only one team got this correct – and we got it correct – so yay?
Mystery Round One
May Artists
Name the artist of each song that appeared in the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100 during the month of May.
M1 – Espresso, 2024
M2 – All of Me, 2014
M3 – This Love, 2004
M4 – The Sign, 1994
What? Nickelback and the correct band in #3 aren’t actually the same band? I’m tellin’ ya, you learn something new every time you go into a bar! Not only are there a lot of Cubs fans in the Saline area, but yeah, that musical fact too!
We just didn’t have the right players in the mix for this one. You know – players who know about music recorded in the past 30 years! 😂 Which explains why the only one we got correct was #4 (I had a college roommate who was obsessed with this band).
Round Two
Netflix – Brenda Song plays Chief of Staff Ali Lee in what Netflix series about managing a sports team that debuted in 2025? FB clue.
NERD POINT – Who plays her best friend?
Yeah, didn’t know the nerd point. So is this series like the Netflix version of Ted Lasso or something? Maybe I should find out more…
Speaking of things we didn’t know…
6 Horse Racing – What is the term for a horse racing bet in which you must correctly predict the first – and second-place finishers in order?
Nope…the correct answer sounds like something an art student from the old days would use to cut paper (and other… things if needed).
7 Firsts – Dr. James Bedford was the first person to have what done to his body after his 1967 death? We knew that mummification had been going on for millennia as had cremation, so we made another guess – one that Walt Disney supposedly had done to him per some urban legends – and we were correct.
8 Directors – Blood Simple was the debut film from what pair of directing brothers known for The Big Lebowski and No Country for Old Men? I’m 50/50 on liking their movies. I either really love them – or watch them and wonder what the f— that was that I wasted two hours watching! But even with their movies that I dislike, I respect their talents! You’re not gonna reach everyone when you do a movie!
As for that meme? I made during the “you know what” thing that happened in 2020! Yes, that is one of the movies from that directing pair that I like!
Mystery Round Two – Visual

Got all of these correct, but #4 was a close call – Mike nearly put something else in for the answer – glad he had me look at what he was going to submit!
We were in third with 45 points going into the final, behind No Talent Ass Clowns who had 47, and Friends from Out of Town who had 49.
Final Category – Brands
What brand got its name from the German word for water and the Greek word for oil?
We knew what the German word for water was. Did this help us come up with the correct answer? Nein!
The two teams ahead of us were able to figure this out better than us, so yay for them! They won first and second.
Game Two/Round Three
9 Fashion – Jeggings are a type of leggings designed to resemble what kind of clothing? Fashion has come full circle. Leggings and these things are not as trendy as they were 10 years ago or so, the high waist/wide leg pants seem to be the fashion “It Girls” now. No thanks to either of these trendy pants styles (I’m way too old for anyone in the fashion biz to listen to me)! Not that I’ve ever been listened to by the fashion industry!
10 Internet – What is the most visited web site ending in a .org domain?
11 Jam Bands – Audio clue of a jam band we didn’t recognize.
12 Oscar Snubs – Most recently nominated for her role in Hillbilly Elegy, who has received the most Academy Award nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress Combined, without winning either award? Miss, I guessed another actress who has been nominated a few times and hasn’t won any yet – but not as many as the right woman. Darn it!
Mystery Round Three
TV Mothers and Daughters
Identify the TV series featuring the following actresses who play mothers and daughters to each other
M1 Lauren Graham and Alexis Biedel
M2 Estelle Getty and Bea Arthur
M3 Jessica Walter and Portia DiRossi
M4 Jackee Harry and Tia Mowry
Missed #1 and #4.
13 Food – Marzipan is a confection consisting primarily of sugar and what hard-shelled fruit that is often mistaken for a nut?
14 Formula One – Sorry I didn’t get this question down, something about which western state a recent race was in. Bonus point for other western states it has been in (miss and miss for us).
15 Album Covers – A photograph of the Hindenburg disaster is featured on what band’s 1969 self-titled debut album?
16 Holidays – What flower is traditionally associated with Mother’s Day? Miss.
Mystery Round Four – NBA Birth Countries
Given the names of the following NBA players, identify their countries of birth.
Tony Parker, Joel Embild, DiKembe Mutombo, Hakeen Olajuwon
Countries – Cameroon, Nigeria, DRC, France
We somehow managed to get two of these correct 🤷♀️
We were in third again heading into the final with 35 points, behind Glizzys Are Amazing who had 45 (I think) and No Talent Ass Clowns who had 48.
Final Category Game Two – Rivers
The fourth-largest river in the United States by discharge, what river has the greatest flow of any river into the eastern Pacific Ocean?
We wagered zero and just put in the joke answer of “You said discharge.”
I think the standings remained the same, just like the Led Zepellin song and movie said. Yes Led Zepellin is one of the answers from this game!
Our next trivia outing will be McShane’s next Tuesday. We’ve been playing mostly Thursdays there, but Tuesday works better for me next week.
As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Walter Sobchak!
