Trivia Recap – Game # 819 – May 2, 2024 – Original Gravity (Milan, MI)

It’s a rare occurrence when we leave after playing only one game on Sporcle Live trivia nights! We weren’t pissed off or anything but… Now that we know how slammed this place gets on nice nights, we’ll just go ahead and order all of the drinks we’ll want for the evening at once – and cash out on them – when we arrive. We can handle warm beer! By the time we wanted to order a second round of drinks and saw the dozen people deep beer line bumping up near the entry door, we decided to just cash out and make our escape. I’m hoping that the bar is better prepared next time we play, but if they aren’t…well, we’re very, very adaptable!

Here’s what the trivia “al fresco” scene looked like:

With just two of us playing, we had no spare players to run up and fetch drinks while the two of us battled the questions. Is it legal to send kids up to get drinks at bars? 😃 Spot them a fiver for waiting in line to get your drinks? There certainly were plenty of kids around on this night, where the trivia event was staged outdoors on the patio! None of them were bothering us, maybe just making us a bit envious of the boundless energy they had for running around and doing…kid stuff!

Judging from the overall scores, which the highest was 95, I’m guessing that both final questions were “doozies.” My post-game recap from Sporcle shows a few teams either got the final in game two correct, or wagered zero. Nobody got the “rivers” final correct in game one, we wagered zero and lost a tiebreaker for first. We are in third overall in the standings after only two weeks of games so far. We’re glad that this place is offering trivia nights again after a five year break!

Round One/Game One

1 Social Media – What does DM stand for in terms of communication on various social media platforms?

2 TV Parents – What main character on the animated series Rugrats is the oldest child of Stu and Didi?

3 National Parks – What national park makes up part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Southeast U.S. along with Dry Tortugas National Park?

4 Motown – What Smokey Robinson-led group released the 1960 single “Shop Around,” which became the first million selling single for Motown Records?

Missed #2, we were more into Ren and Stimpy around this time!

Mystery Round One

Only knew #1. Made effort to get #2, but just couldn’t remember the whole title.

Round Two

5 Ambassadors – Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were the first two people to serve as the U.S. ambassador to what country?

6 Olympians – In 1992, what woman became the first Asian American athlete to earn a gold medal at the Winter Olympics, doing so in ladies’ singles figure skating?

7 Science – Nitrate is an ion consisting of nitrogen and what other element?

8 Games – Name either of the board games produced by Milton Bradley that have four- word titles beginning with the word “Don’t.”

NERD POINT – Name both.

Missed the nerd point.

Mystery Round Two – Finish each other’s sandwiches

Name thr type of sandwich based on the list of traditional ingredients and its potential origin

M1 Ground beef, onions and tomato sauce or ketchup served on a hamburger bun; possibly created by (and named for) a bar owner in Havana in 1917

M2 Peanut butter, banana and bacon on toasted bread; origin unknown but popularly associated with (and named for) a singer

M3 Batter dipped ham sandwich that is pqn or deep fried and sometimes coated with powdered sugar; possibly created at a Paris café in the 1940s

M4 Corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and Russian dressing or Thousand Island dressing on rye bread; origin stories variously credit a grocer in Omaha and a deli owner in New York City

We may not know much about recent Oscar nominated films, but we do know about sammies (got all of these).

We were in fifth going into the final with 44 points. That team that we suspect cheated in last week’s tiebreaker against us was in first with 50 points and were sitting on the other side of the fence where the host couldn’t see them. I’m not saying that they cheated in this game too, but…let’s just say that next time maybe we’ll try to become their new best friends! If only we can handle all of the unruly toddlers that sit with them (ugh).

Seriously, teams – if you’re gonna cheat to win trivia games, eventually you’ll get caught and revealed to be…well, dumb. And super lame. Worst case, you can be banned from the bar (it happened recently when a metro Detroit bar cracked down on a guy that mysteriously won lots and lots of cash prizes over a period of months). Rest assured – for every shitty and good trivia game we’ve played over the past 12 years, we come by every score and prize honestly!

So, what now? Oh yeah that final question!

Final Category- Rivers

Nope…we decided not to wager on this.

The four longest rivers in Europe collectively flow into two different bodies of water. Name both of those bodies of water.

No teams got this. Not even that team that “probably” cheated on that tiebreaker with us last week. Speaking of tiebreaker…

Mysteriously, we were in a tiebreaker for first with…”that” team again. Which means that they wagered exactly seven points. Why? A full zero wager would have still put them in first. This team though….(guess every trivia spot needs that “team to beat,” but if our “team to beat” is one that cheats)? And really – unlike when I put in trivia game answers?

I don’t WANT to be right! I want to believe that no teams cheat in trivia games!

Tiebreaker Lesley Gore and Ellie Kemper share a May 2 birthday how many years apart?

The other team won, but…I don’t think that they cheated (the host did go check on them…maybe that scared ’em off?

It certainly would have helped if I had an idea who the fuck Lesley Gore was…whomever it was I thought she was, I thought she was born a whole lot earlier. Still we got $10!

We’ll be back next week, but won’t be able to play every week. I like the option of being able to play trivia games outdoors, even with the inherent quirks involved.

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Benjamin Franklin!
