These days we’re starting to feel like a Foreigner single – in particular, “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” but also “Double Vision.” Now that I’ve gotten those songs stuck in your heads (bwa ha ha ha)!…
Some of you song facts nerds probably already know what I’m talking about! But if you’re not a Billboard charts nerd, I’ll explain it for you – Like the rock band Foreigner, we’ve been pretty darn good at being #2 this past trivia season – finishing second for the night four times out of 10 games (and once hitting #1 and #3). As for prizes, we’ve won five second place prizes and one first place prize. We’ve only had more than three players for our games…maybe three times? When one of your closest teammates lives about 27 minutes away from you, it can be a challenge! The occasional after-work meetups are the best we can do on some weeks.
Here were our questions, which are NOT abridged!
Game One/Round One
1 Baseball – In 1961, Roger Maris broke the single-season MLB home run record that was previously set in 1927 by what other New York Yankees player? Ya know a sportsball question is too easy when my husband and I know the answer!
2 Board Games – What board game, introduced in 1963, came equipped with a number of extra parts, including a diver, rickety stairs, two tubs and two balls?
3 Comics – In Popeye comics, on which day of the week does Wimpy say he will “gladly pay you… for a hamburger today?” Nerd point, in what decade was Wimpy introduced? Yay we’re old! Unsure if we got the nerd point, though.
4 Presidents – F.W. de Klerk served as the president of what country from 1989-1994?
Mystery Round One – “Show Me the MONY”
the correct answer to each clue is a word that ends in the letters “MONY,” in that order
M1 A declaration by a witness under oath, often before a court or deliberative body
M2 The combination of simultaneous musical notes in a chord
M3 The predominance of one state or social group over others
M4 A ritual observance performed at a formal event or celebration
Got all of these, special kudos to Mike for knowing #3!
Round Two
5 Money – One of the highest bridges in the U.S. is the New River Gorge Bridge, which is depicted on the reverse side of what state’s quarter? Thankfully Mike and Brad didn’t need my help here…
6 Singers – Audio clip of cover song, had to ID the singer of original song (released in 2006 by what English singer-songwriter).
Lyrics:
Girl, put your records on, tell me your favorite song
You go ahead, let your hair down
Miss.
7 Bones – The hamate bone, lunate bone and pisiform bone are all part of an eight-bone group in what part of the body? Miss.
8 Sidekicks – What are the names of both the crab and fish sidekicks of Ariel, in the 1989 film The Little Mermaid? We knew one, but not both, miss.
Mystery Round Two – Queer Eye Quickfire (Yikes)!
Give the first names of four of the original “Fab Five” experts on the Bravo series Queer Eye, which aired from 2003-2007
Miss, miss, miss and…miss. You know what I don’t miss? Metrosexual men’s fashions (there I said it). My poor husband went on a strike for at least a couple of years and didn’t buy anything new during this time!
We were in fourth going into the final with 46 points. Brad and I decided that we felt confident enough to wager it all on the category of…
NHL Teams
Which NHL team that has won three Stanley Cup championships plays its home games almost 600 miles away from the closest team, making it the most isolated franchise in the league?
Brad came up with the correct guess right away. And Mike proceeded to vet him for the next couple of minutes – “Are you sure it’s not this, this or this team?” We stuck to Brad’s answer and got a $10/second place prize!
Round Three/Game Two
9 Characters – Birdie the Early Bird was a character introduced in 1980 to promote new breakfast items in what fast-food franchise? Mike and I remembered this from when we were kids, so we got it.
10 Gambling – In horse racing, what bet requires a person to choose the top three finishers in a race? Nice work Brad…
11 1990s Films – Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan star as Sam and Annie, who live on opposite sides of the country, in what 1993 film? Sure things in life – death, taxes, too many seasons of Keeping up with the Kardashians and…the ‘Pods will ALWAYS f— up questions about Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan films! Does this mean that we have to actually WATCH these movies (the horror)! No thanks, I’d rather watch Meg Ryan’s son in animated form in “Lower Decks.” Big miss…
12 U.S. History – In which decade of the 20th Century was the Federal Reserve System established in the United States? Miss, we went too late.
Mystery Round Three – Add ‘Em Up
Each answer will be a number. Those four numbers will add up to 50.
M1 Number of years or marriage to celebrate the pearl anniversary
M2 Number of U.S. states that begin with the letter “T”
M3 Number of players in a typical basketball team’s starting lineup
M4 The eighth number in the Fibonacci sequence
We got all of these.
Round Four
13 Video Games – Featuring better graphics and a more advanced controller, what video game console was introduced in 1979 by Mattel to compete with the Atari 2600?
Nerd point, what is the name of the handheld gaming line released by Nintendo in this same generation of console?
Miss and miss.
14 Sitcoms – What TV sitcom starring Tracee Ellis Ross, Golden Brooks and Persia White aired from 2000-2009 on UPN and the CW? FB clue.
15 Bodies of Water – Lake Nasser, one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, was created by a dam on what river, one of the longest in the world? If you remember what country Nasser served as president, it’s pretty easy to narrow down the answer. Also “one o the longest rivers in the world” was a big clue, too.
16 Cookbooks – First self-published in 1974, the Moosewood Cookbook features recipes for what type of dishes – desserts, low carb, vegetarian or wild game? Easy way to finish the round.
Mystery Round Four – Visual
Missed #1 and #4. I still haven’t listened to any of #4’s music on purpose…ever. But, since I’m using Spotify as I’m typing this…why not? I can always stop it if I think it sucks! Nah, too honky tonk for my tastes (sorry everybody has a “type” when it comes to music and honky tonk ain’t mine).
We were in fourth going into the final with 39 points. We wagered zero on the category of:
TV Awards
The Carol Burnett Award is an honorary Golden Globe awarded since 2019 for “outstanding contributions to television on or off the screen.” Carol Burnett was the initial winner, with three other honorees since. Name one of those three winners – one primarily known for on-screen contributions, and the other two primarily known for off-screen contributions.
One team got this correct.
Oh well…
