REVISED – Trivia Recap – Game # 712 – August 23, 2022 – Virtual Sporcle “Pub Quiz” Format

We managed to get a tough final question correct about art in a recent virtual trivia game! Which is nice, because usually we’re 50/50 on getting art final questions correct. Make that 25/75. 20/80? This time around, I happened to be in the bathroom while my husband went to work on the answers, and I heard him yell out an answer he was putting in (oh the luxury of playing virtual games where you can engage in such craziness of shouting out answers while in your “breakout rooms” on Zoom)!

Back in the long, long ago when we played trivia in actual public buildings with other humans, it was a big no-no to verbally broadcast answers lest other teams might hear them. On our team, we might as well have called the term “Bradcast,” because we had a player named Brad with a loud voice! Because of this, I would bring loose leaf paper to all of our games so that players could brainstorm and show other players prospective answers on paper instead of loudly discussing answers. Providing paper and pens to my players worked out well for years, right up until I had a smart ass player (whom our team wound up parting ways with later) said, “Why do I get the pink pen?” I said, “If you don’t like the pens I provide, you can bring your own!” I’m pretty sure I gave him the pink pen on purpose though! I also thought it would be funny to get one of those oversized novelty pencils they used to sell in souvenir shops to give out to players asking for writing implements (especially ones who annoyed me)!

You could stake a vampire with one of these pencils!

As for the virtual game? Meh. We finished in third with 59 points, moved up from sixth. Here were our questions:

1 Kids’ Books – What is the name of the turtle referenced in the title of a book by Dr. Seuss?

2 Slogans –  What four-word slogan, which originated in the mid-18th century, expressed a grievance against the British Parliament for passing laws affecting the colonies? Originally our host was only going to accept “taxation without representation” as the correct answer, but because another player who had put in the four word answer we put as our answer made a plea with her (Jessi from Washington, D.C.) about this – she conferred with the league, and they said “Yes, accept both answers.” Yay! We were so mad when we thought we missed it that we were going to dump a bunch of tea into Lake St. Clair! JK, JK! We shake off such mistakes in trivia games much better than we did in the long, long ago!

3 Airports –  In 2001, the international airport in Tirana, Albania, was named in honor of what woman?
4 Boxing – Since the 1980s, professional boxing matches have been limited to a maximum of how many rounds?

Mystery One –

Got all of these correct (would not be as lucky with the next mystery round)

Round Two –

5 Country Music – Name one of the two women solo artists who have had more than 90 total songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart.

My trivia pardner Mike was all over this and knew both of the correct ladies (one of whom was recently a guest star on the TV series The Orville). It was quite an undertaking moving a partial set from Los Angeles to Nashville – because this guest star, because of concerns about COVID, refused to travel by plane and offered use of her studios – where all of her employees are regularly tested for COVID. It was a great episode and a great scene – I’d say it was worth the effort to get yo ass to Nashville for THIS woman!

6 Mergers – In 2015, Kraft merged with what other company, forming one of the largest food companies in the world?

7 Animals – Brindle is a type of coat coloring in animals that is best described by which of the following?

A) Colored spots
B) Streaks of color
C) One solid color
D) No color

8 Toys – N-Strike, N-Strike Elite, Vortex, and Alpha Strike are product lines in what brand of toys made by Hasbro? The letter “N” was a good clue for us here.

Mystery Two –

Missed all of these. Fail…

We were in sixth going into the final with 44 points, no thanks to that second mystery round, ugh!

Final category – Art

From 1912 to 1948, art competitions formed part of the modern Olympic Games, with medals awarded for works inspired by sports.

Name three of the five categories of art for which medals were awarded.

I’m glad Mike didn’t go with my guesses, he was clearly all over this one!

As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Dolly Parton! I don’t care how much makeup or plastic surgery you’ve had, YOU ARE AWESOME!!! I will buy an American flag just to put it at half mast when we lose you!
