Trivia Recap – One Hit Wonders Theme – Virtual/Streaming – February 2, 2021

The music subcategory of “One Hit Wonders” was the subject of a virtual trivia game we attempted Tuesday evening. It’s a harder category than you think – did X artist actually have more than one Billboard hit – or didn’t they? We flubbed the final, which was about (big surprise) one hit wonder songs! We did “so-so” in this category, it was largely hit – or miss – but still a fun way to test our obscure music knowledge (even if many of the things that were asked were a bit TOO obscure for us)!

1. Animals – What animal is the subject of a 2000 song by the Baha Men that peaked at #40?

2. Lyrics – According to the lyrics of a 1958 song, what title character “rocks in the tree-top all the day long, hoppin’ and a-boppin’ and a-singin’ his song”?

3. Music Videos – Kimbra is a singer from New Zealand who featured on what 2012 song by a Belgian-born Australian that has a music video featuring them both being painted to blend in with the background?

4. Singers and Covers – Suzanne Vega has only one top 40 hit in the U.S. as a singer, but a cover of her song reached #5 in 1990 after being released by DNA.Name either of those songs.

Here’s one of several actors from the 1980s who weren’t content to just be known for their TV/film roles!

5. Double Threats – What actor reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 with a song released on the soundtrack album to a 1987 film in which he starred as Johnny Castle? This prompted a conversation about other ’80s film actors who seemed to feel they also needed to have Billboard hits.

6. Song Titles – A song written by Marc Bolan was originally released in the U.K. as “Get It On,” but was released in the U.S. with that name in parentheses, having been given what other title from its lyrics instead?

7. Duets – What artist duetted with Kanye West on “American Boy,” which won the Grammy Award for Best Melodic Rap Performance in 2009? Our first (but not last) miss of the game.

8. Instruments – What is the only weather instrument mentioned in the lyrics of “It’s Raining Men” by The Weather Girls?

9. Stage Names – What is the single-character stage name of Rudy Martínez, the frontman of the Mysterians, who hit #1 in 1966 with the song “96 Tears”? This was a bit puzzling for us, but we stumbled upon the right answer…

10. Difficulties – In his only Hot 100 single, what is Duncan Sheik struggling to do?

Mystery – Days

Given the artist and year, name the song that reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100.

Each title includes the word “day,” either on its own or as part of another word.

M1. Spiral Staircase (1969)

M2. The Boomtown Rats (1979)M3. Daniel Powter (2005)

M4. ILoveMakonnen (ft. Drake) (2014)Missed #1 and #4.

There are seven songs with at least one numeral in their titles that are their artists’ only songs to reach the top 30 of the Hot 100 in the 1980s or 1990s.Name the artists of three of those seven songs.

Note: This does not include songs that have numbers spelled out, such as “Just the Two of Us,” “Two of Hearts,” and “It Takes Two.”

We picked two correct artists, and were very, very hesitant about the third one we picked (which was Sammy Hagar). We were right to be as hesitant about putting down his name as the answer as he was to drive 55 miles per hour (some of you will get that older music reference)! Why we didn’t think of a couple of others that should’ve been obvious? Well… (shrugs)! It was still fun! We’ll be keeping an eye out for some other music themed games, preferably not ones involving music that’s TOO recent (we are on the more Gen Xer side of trivia, after all)! As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Sammy Hagar!
