The axolotl, or Mexican walking fish, is an amphibian with regenerative powers to grow back lost limbs. Its numbers are dwindling in the wild due to pollution and habitat destruction. Axolotls are unusual among amphibians in that they reach adulthood without undergoing metamorphosis. Instead of developing lungs and taking to the land, adults remain aquatic and gilled.
