Fact Du Jour – September 8, 2019 – The Doctor Who Said “No” To Thalidomide

Thalidomide caused widespread deformities in babies born throughout Europe (particularly the limbs). The drug, which was prescribed in the 1950s for morning sickness, is thought to have caused serious birth defects in as many as 10,000 infants. Thalidomide was blocked from getting FDA approval in the United States and Canada largely due to the efforts of Canadian physician Frances Oldham Kelsey, who died at 101 in 2015.
