Fact Du Jour – September 4, 2019 – U.S. President Whose Second Language Was English

You might already know that Martin Van Buren was the eighth president of the United States and might also know he was one of a few presidents born in New York (others being Millard Fillmore, Theodore Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt and Donald Trump). You might also know his nickname was “Kinderhook.”

Another oddball fact about Van Buren besides his being the first president born after the U.S. gaining independence from the British empire in 1782 – was that English wasn’t his first language. He was raised speaking Dutch and learned English at school.
