Fact Du Jour – July 17, 2019 – Why Do Cartoon Characters Wear White Gloves (And Have Four Fingers)?

Ever wonder why cartoon characters wear white gloves? You can learn more about that in this article, but the short answers are “laziness,” and “it just looked better.”

Early animated characters were in black and white, so the white gloves just provided much needed contrast, which is something that also came into play in 1920s “blackface,” or minstrel shows, of which an example is seen below:

Have you also ever wondered why cartoon characters also tend to have four fingers instead of five? This was all Walt Disney. He said the tiny characters just looked better with fewer fingers – and fewer fingers meant fewer things to animate. So…laziness, then? Think about how many animated characters – human and animal – have four fingers instead of five.

Unless you’re Jesus or God on The Simpsons

My trivia team missed a question about which Simpsons characters have five fingers instead of four – the answers are Jesus – and God.
