Slavery has been a way of life in Haiti ever since Christopher Columbus and his men set foot on the island of Hispaniola in 1492. Slaves were forced to grow crops, build cities, work sugar plantations, working in gold mines and…in some cases – service the Spanish men sexually. Today, Haiti reigns as the third most enslaved country in the world, bested only by the African country of Mauritania (which is in first) and Uzbekistan, which is second, according to the Global Slavery Index.
