We’re (About) Two-Thirds of the Way There – A ‘Pods Trivia Update (April 19, 2019)

We’ve logged scores in 15 Sporcle Live trivia games since January. Our scores have ranged from three (that Johnny’s Grill game, where we abandoned ship because of the Hamilton categories) to 156 on Jan. 31 at Sticks. We’ve had just seven Sporcle Live games with scores exceeding 100 points, with an overall average score per night at all venues of about 90 points. Not terribly impressive, but we rarely play with more than 2-3 players. We skipped one week for Sporcle Live games, but made up for it by playing two this past week.

The majority of our games have been played at Sticks in Ypsilanti, where we’ve averaged a nightly score of about 110 points over five games – and Original Gravity, where we’ve averaged a nightly score of about 90.5 per night (over six games). It’s still unclear whether we’ll be able to RSVP for the Sporcle Live semifinal games in June – and even more unclear as to whether we’ll be able to field a team if we make it out of semifinals and into finals. One of my best tournament players has already told me he’s unavailable for the state championship.

But we’re not really eyeing the “endgame” as much as just focusing on the nightly trivia battles – and most importantly -winning beer money! With our most recent trivia game, we hit $205 in total prizes for the year, which means we’ve averaged just under $10 in prize winnings every night we go out for a trivia game. Some trivia nights are obviously better than others! We had a first place “sweep” at Sticks Jan. 31, a first/second place prize at Original Gravity Feb. 7, and won a $30 prize at Powell’s Pub March 4. Then there are those nights where you get no prize – or final question love! Nine out of our 22 total trivia nights played (Sporcle Live and MTL) were prizeless. This means about four times out of 10 we walked away with no prizes.

We’ve battled a total of 34 final questions in Sporcle Live and MTL regulation games this year which we’ve played to completion (Johnny’s game is not included) and have gotten 13 of those correct (about 46 percent). I don’t have any data for how many of those final questions were flunked by all of the teams in the room, but that HAS happened!

It’s unclear whether we’ll play any MTL games in the near future. A new Monday night Sporcle Live spot has opened up very close to home for us, so for the time being, we’ll continue giving those games a try (my players seem to be happy with this trivia scene). Our trivia nights usually revolve around which days I have off at work, so our trivia plans are always subject to change!

This is just about enough data crunching for one afternoon!

We’re thinking of using this as our team name at a Simpsons trivia night May 2 – “Thinking too much gives you wrinkles.”
