In her 1972 hit song You’re So Vain, singer/songwriter Carly Simon sings:
I’ll bet you think this song is about you – don’t you?
I may not want THAT song to be about me! Apparently, Carly Simon…had a few sexual partners in the day (NOT judging…not judging), and the song is actually about multiple people, although she has still not revealed whom all of these people are. What would Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder say to that?
Who says women can’t be “playas” too? Big dicks optional (LOL)!
Ms. Simon has revealed that the song’s second verse was about Warren Beatty. You know – Dick Tracy? Bugsy? That guy who directed Reds? Mrs. Annette Bening? Are these pop culture references a bit too “young” for ya? Well, he is also Shirley MacLaine’s brother, and he was in a 1975 film called Shampoo, where he played a slutty hairdresser or something. According to the song’s lyrics, he “had” Carly Simon. If his photo from Shampoo is any indicator, he was likely a heartthrob back in the day when I would have just been a toddler (maybe my mother thought he was a cutie, I’ll have to ask her next time I see her). Behold:
Warren Beatty in Shampoo.
Oh, you had me several years ago
When I was still naive
Well, you said that we made such a pretty pair
And that you would never leave
But you gave away the things you loved
And one of them was me
I had some dreams, they were clouds in my coffee
Clouds in my coffee…
I actually like this song. It’s a great “kiss and tell” song, and usually flies well with crowds on a karaoke night (they like to sing along with it). It’s also enough of a challenge to keep me interested, the lyrics about going to Saratoga are actually quite tricky – especially after you’ve had some drinks!
Well I hear you went to Saratoga
And your horse, naturally, won
Then you flew your Learjet up to Nova Scotia
To see the total eclipse of the sun
Well, you’re where you should be all the time
And when you’re not, you’re with some underworld spy
Or the wife of a close friend,
Wife of a close friend…
Did you know Carly Simon’s other hit song Anticipation was about singer/songwriter Cat Stevens? Of course you did!
Sadly, You’re So Vain isn’t about me – or YOU! Well, maybe it is about you! Does Mick Jagger or David Geffen follow this blog? Sorry, it probably isn’t about you (there, there). Without further ado…
Songs I Wish Were About Me
Brick House, Commodores
Yes, that is Lionel Richie you’re seeing in the photo…why oh why aren’t they wearing old-timey commodore outfits?
Ow, she’s a brick house
Yeah, she’s the one, the only one, built like an AmazonThe clothes she wears, her sexy ways
Make an old man wish for younger days, yeah, yeah
She knows she’s built and knows how to please
Sure enough to knock a strong man to his knees
Witchy Woman, The Eagles
Well, I know you want a lover
Let me tell you, brother
She’s been sleeping in the devil’s bed
And there’s some rumours going round, someone’s underground
She can rock you in the night-time ’til your skin turns red
Simply Irresistible, Robert Palmer
She’s a craze you’d endorse, she’s a powerful force
You’re obliged to conform when there’s no other course
She used to look good to me, but now I find her…
Every 1’s a Winner, Hot Chocolate
Never could explain just what was happening to me,
Just one touch of you and I’m a flame.
Baby, it’s amazing just how wonderful it is
That the things we like to do are just the same
Two Fine People, Cat Stevens
I love you
Though the time may change and snowmen sleep in the sea
And I really only want you to want me. I love you
And the song that I sing is the only way that I can explain…
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, The Police
Though I’ve tried before to tell her
Of the feelings I have for her in my heart
Every time that I come near her
I just lose my nerve
As I’ve done from the start
On second thought? I don’t think I REALLY want this song to be about me! This sounds like it would be from my high school soundtrack though (oh the humanity…)! I still like the song, though.
This concludes my list! What songs do you wish were about YOU? Blank Space by Taylor Swift? I Touch Myself by the DiVinyls? Justify My Love by Madonna?
