Primetime Emmy Winners – 1990s

Ahh, ’90s TV! Television in the 1990s was a time of great change, when cable channels started getting Emmy nominations, David Lynch was allowed to do a TV series (Twin Peaks) for a short time (what a glorious time THAT was), people were just beginning to endure Ray Romano’s annoying Kermit The Frog-like voice every week and you could fantasize about being able to live in an apartment in New York City like the ones on Friends and Sex and the City.

When they weren’t hogging all of the best seats at Central Perk, chances are you’d see the cast of Friends here.

If traditional doctor/cop/lawyer shows such as Law & Order, Chicago Hope, The Practice and NYPD Blue weren’t really your thing, chances are you were probably a fan of The X-Files, which got its share of Emmy nominations during this decade (including a win for Gillian Anderson as best leading actress in a drama series). Ally McBeal made waves by having a co-ed bathroom, years before the debate about which people should use which bathrooms became a real “thing.”

Sigh…honestly, I don’t care if all bathrooms are unisex, as long as everyone gets a stall. Could we have at least one big stall with a diaper changing station, too – pretty please?  I don’t want to see guys pissing at urinals, and they sure as f— don’t want to see women doing what they have to do in bathrooms! Put in a separate “mirror only” area where people can primp without blocking the sink for people who just want to wash their hands (more about hand washing in a bit). But that’s just the thing. Some people can’t mind their own business in bathrooms and think it’s fun to get “chatty.” No…thank you! The only restrooms for “socializing” are gas station restrooms or those creepy ones along the Interstate (you KNOW the ones I mean). Oh yes, and please, for the love of doing small things to fight everyday filth, wash your damn hands when you’re done in the bathroom!

I never watched a single episode of Ally McBeal. But it was a pretty huge “mcdeal” when it first aired.

This blog will list the leading actor nominees/winners in comedy and drama series from the 1990s, as well as the nominees for comedy/drama series. Winners will be denoted in boldface type.

Yes, Burt Reynolds not only starred in a TV series, but won an Emmy Award (best leading actor in a comedy series for Evening Shade).  If you think this photo is racy, then you should see his Playgirl photo where he’s lounging nude on a bearskin rug and smoking a cigarette (not that I’ve seen it or anything).
