What, so you only played ONE trivia show on Thursday night? Amateur! π Three of us decided, after playing an ill-fated Star Trek theme trivia night, to hit up a second trivia show Thursday night at Sticks, which is the “upstairs” bar at Aubree’s, a restaurant/bar in Ypsilanti’s historic “Depot Town.” The building may be historically significant, but the women’s restroom upstairs is no longer… “historic!” It no longer resembles a restroom from 1981 (the old pink doors/tiles are gone) – and now has new flooring, new doors, and new plumbing fixtures (though sadly, for whatever reason, one of the automatic faucets only felt like providing a trickle of water). Most importantly? The door locks work (you gotta appreciate the simple things)!
As for the game, we missed the game one final about “hunky” U.S. presidents (wink-wink), but got the game two final about movie voices correct – and won a $10 gift card – 110 total points.

One of my favorite “hunky U.S. presidents” – William McKinley. There is just something about that slight…sneer!
When we arrived at Sticks close to 9:30 p.m. (game started at 9 p.m.), a fellow “crew member” Evan was already holding down the fort for us. In addition to this, he also wrote down the questions we weren’t present to help him answer! These questions will be abbreviated…
Game One
1. – Dolls – Matryoshka dolls, also known as stacking dolls, originated in what country? 7
2. Animated TV – What Disney Channel original animated series, airing from 2002 to 2007, used a theme song by Christina Milian called “Call me, beep me?” Miss for 1.
3. World HistoryΒ – In what century did Vatican City gain its independence from Italy via the Lateran Treaty? Miss for 2.
4. Titles – Name two of the three titles between Duke and Baron used by British royalty. Miss for 4 (we would have helped him get this one).
5. Hall of Fame Athletes – The first WWE Hall of Fame class had which single inductee who weighed 520 pounds and stood 7 foot 4 inches tall and died the previous year? 10
6. R&B Music – Since 1958, three music artists, all solo artist, have had at least 19 songs reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts, which are currently classified as “hip-hop.” Name one of those artists, two for a bonus point. Miss for 5.
7. Ad Campaigns – Which company’s “Do Us a Flavor” campaign made regional flavored varieties – including pimiento cheese in the Southeast – lobster roll in New England – and spice in the Central Gulf? 9
8. U.S. Geography – Idaho shares a land border with how many other U.S. states? 8

10. 2010s Movies – What 2018 film was the first superhero film that has been nominated for the Academy Award for best picture? 3
Mystery – Audio – Had to identify either the artist singing – or the artist the singer was imitating…(unsure how I’m supposed to translate this for readers), we got six points out of this round.
Scores: Ten teams, scores 32 to 65 with Man Guys in first. We were in third with 52 points.
Final Category – Before they were president
Prior to serving as U.S. president, who appeared on the cover of a 1942 issue of Cosmopolitan magazine wearing a U.S. Navy uniform?
None of us “knew” this answer, unfortunately, so it all came down to making the best educated guess. We talked about presidents who came from money, presidents who would have been “hunky” enough for that (hey, a heterosexual female is occasionally needed on a trivia team, wink-wink)…good thing is was we didn’t guess the OBVIOUS one that a lot of other teams guessed! But we didn’t guess the right “hunky president” (which is one of my favorite “pet” trivia topics). Even William McKinley was kind of “hunky” in his Civil War uniform!

We put down this guy as our answer for final #1 (which was incorrect).
When the correct answer was revealed, I said “Huh…well, he WAS hunky enough…I just didn’t realize he was in the Navy.”
Final standings: ??? (something with the word “feel” in the name), 59 (zero wager), and Man Guys, 78.
Game Two
1. Boy Band Lyrics – In the 1999 single I Want It That Way, what word do the Backstreet Boys rhyme three times with the word “time?” 10
2. Football Players – Who was the most recent Heisman Trophy winner that was also the first overall draft pick? Evan the “MVP” here for 9.
3. Recipes – In a traditional beef Wellington recipe, what makes up the outermost layer of the dish? 8
4. Long Running TV – Name two of the three first names of people appearing as regulars on the TV series Mythbusters besides Jamie or Adam? Miss for 1.
5. Palaces – Crystal Palace, which was located in the Hyde Park area of what city – and was built for the Great Exhibition of 1851? Brad the hero here, this prompted a discussion about “interesting” sports team names from this region of the world…4
6. Video Game Characters – Other than Donkey Kong, there are three playable characters in the Donkey Kong Country trilogy released for Super Nintendo. Name one of those three characters. 7
7. Political Leaders – since January, 2015, who has served as the Senate Majority Leader? 6.
8. ’60s Movies – Whom was the title character in the movie with the subtitle “How I learned to stop worrying and love the atomic bomb? 5
9. Math Words – What is the two-word term used to measure the variation in a set of data values which is represented by the sigma symbol or Ο? Evan the “mathmagician” here for 3.
10. Books – According to Goodreads, the most popular book to re-read is what novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald?
Visual Mystery –

Missed #s 1 and 2. A solo African American player was the only “team” to get all of these correct (I confirmed this fact with the host). Well played, Michael B.!
Scores: Eleven teams, scores ??? to 59 with Dirty Mike and the Boys in first. we were in second with 58.
Final Category – Movie Voices
Brad did NOT want to wager on this. But he was overwhelmingly overruled.
Name three of the four performers who provided voices of the characters Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf in the 2013 Disney animated film Frozen.
I knew two of these right away and brain farted on the third name. Thankfully the name that escaped me came easily to Evan (fist bump)!
Final standings: ‘Pods, 78; Dirty Mike and the Boys, 71.
Whew…three trivia games in one week! It’s been a long time since such a thing has happened! Could it be…am I finally getting back on the trivia “horse?” Looking ahead to next week, our only trivia night is likely to be Monday at Powell’s. I’ve been scheduled to work Friday, so barring attending any “local” trivia shows, it’s not likely we’ll be able to play Thursday. Though it HAS been a while since we’ve played at Original Gravity! That may have to wait until the week of March 3. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, George H.W. Bush (our correct game 1 final answer).
