I was pretty beat when I clocked out today. Six hours on my feet – lifting, opening boxes, shoving merchandise at my co-workers to strip, size, colorize and alphabetize (kidding about that last thing, except when it comes to bras which must be put in alphabetical AND numerical order, LOL). And as if all of that wasn’t enough two tons of fun on a bun? I also had to flatten every single box I opened and load them into a terrifying (and noisy) World War II era box baler (which I’ve fantasized about throwing bodies in from time to time). All in an non-climate controlled environment! Still, I didn’t want to deprive myself of the “zen” experience of taking a brisk walk and listening to my “jams” on my itty bitty music player! My post-work walks have proven to be a very effective way to calm the f— down after a work shift – and have become kind of a…meditative experience, in their own way! And they’re strangely empowering, too! Something I can’t quite explain…
Today, it’s raining outside, which means all of the gorgeous icy tree branches from the ice storm are no more! I’m not a huge fan of driving in icy drizzle, but I do like how the tree branches look like they’re coated with glass, making it kind of an icy fairy world.
Which means I walked in the (drum roll) local consumerist Mecca – aka the “shopping mall!” I completed two circuits, which is about two miles in a half hour, which means I averaged a four-mile per hour pace throughout.
So what tunes helped keep me moving today? Here’s what my Sandisk mp3 player picked randomly today! A couple of songs I’d normally skip if they came on in my car really hit the spot…
The Beastie Boys sampled lots of different rock tracks in their songs – Led Zeppelin’s The Ocean is sampled in their 1986 song She’s Crafty (from their License to Ill album). Rhymin’ and Stealin’ from the same album sampled a couple of different classic rock tracks – When The Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath’s Sweet Leaf. Rhymin’ and Stealin’ is one of my favorite Beastie Boys songs, and that’s no accident – because Zeppelin’s When The Levee Breaks is one of favorite Zeppelin songs! Imitation the sincerest form of flattery?
