Anyone remember alternative rock singer Matthew Sweet? He was a pretty big deal on the early 1990s music scene, storming the modern rock charts (hitting #4) with the song Girlfriend. He also had a hit album of the same name, which featured actress Tuesday Weld on the cover, as seen below:
Well, Matthew Sweet might have also had an unhealthy obsession with actress Winona Ryder. And let’s be realistic – what early 1990s male DIDN’T have an unhealthy obsession with Winona Ryder? What Gen-X male doesn’t STILL have an unhealthy obsession with Winona Ryder? Her “mom” roles on Star Trek (2009) and Stranger Things be damned!
Winona Ryder in Stranger Things
I am posing the theory that not only was the Matthew Sweet song Winona about Winona Ryder – but Matthew Sweet’s song Girlfriend was AlSO about Winona Ryder! Consider these lyrics for Girlfriend:
I didn’t know nobody
And then I saw you coming my way
Oh, I didn’t know nobody
And then I saw you coming my wayDon’t you need to
Be back in the arms of a good friend?
Oh, ’cause, honey, believe me
I’d sure love to call you my girlfriend
Take a listen to his very “stalkerish” song called…Winona.
While Mr. Sweet can be a kind of obsessive personality, his interest in Ms. Ryder can be considered in a sort of iconic adoration of the time. Ms Ryder being the Gal of note circa 1990.
Great song tho.
Best wishes to all.
Pretty much all hetero gen x dudes had a crush on Winona, lol. And some gay women!
