Trivia Recap – Dec. 24, 2015 – Corner Brewery (REVISED)

Editor’s note: Slight revisions have been made to this recap from about three years ago today.

A few of us ‘Pods had initially planned to have a Festivus campfire, but Mother Nature cruelly put the kibosh on those plans. Curse her! But if you want to look at it another way, we tend to have great trivia games during stormy weather (even snowstorms), we joke that it’s because of Cthulhu revealing himself. But trivia was not on our agenda for that night. However, since one of our players is way too addicted to this game to just sit in Arbor Brewing Company Microbrewery while Sporcle Live Trivia with Kuma is going on without being involved somehow, the whole “no trivia” thing was not to come to pass! This crack-headed player wound up writing down all of the questions for game one, and even joined in with a one-person team whose teammates had abandoned him (another teammate joined late in game one, so don’t feel too sorry for him!). Also, turns out he held his own fantastically. Shout out to Nick from “Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender,” We’ve heard rumors that he’s the “brains” of the team, and he proved that with spades on Wednesday! Our lone player only helped slightly with the last few questions of game one and especially the final question, but we’ll get more into that later. Now let’s get to the questions already! This re-cap covers questions for game one plus one regular round and the final in game two only.
1. TV – What Fox drama which debuted in 2013 is loosely based on short stories by Washington Irving?
2. Commercials – In an iconic commercial from the ’80s, what kind of car is used while advertising “Grey Poupon” mustard?
3. Movie Characters – What 1999 film was the second to star Julia Roberts and Richard Gere?
4. Pop Music – What instrumentalist recorded Miracles: The Holiday Album, which became the best-selling holiday album for the past 25 years? This proves people have no taste whatsoever….
5. Comedians – The Marx Brothers are comprised of Groucho, Gummo, Zeppo, Chico and what other brother?
6. Speeches – Audio clue of sportsing guy I did not hang around to listen to. Some guy named Jim something at the 1993 ESPY awards?
7. Canada – What is the only Canadian province with no land borders?
8. Academy Awards – (this is when our ‘Pod joined in on the fun) Isaac Hayes won the Academy Award for best song by writing the the theme song to what 1971 film? For nerd bonus, what was the name of the actor playing the title character in the film? Got both (but he didn’t need my help here).
9. Human Body – Produced by pituitary gland, what does HGH stand for?
10. Fashion – New York, London, Paris and what other city is involved in “Fashion Week?” Kuma pronounced the town the “Michigan” way, not the Italian way (nicely played).

Did you know the band Twisted Sister made a cameo appearance in the 1985 film Pee Wee’s Big Adventure? In the movie, the band was filming a video, and Pee Wee crashed the set.

Mystery: Before and After
1. 1986 film starring Paul Hogan and lead singer of Twisted Sister.
2. 2015 National League MVP and the author of To Kill a Mockingbird.
3. Animated shows sharing space with the Cartoon Network and an item of clothing essential when going to a pool (not sure if we worded this one exactly right)
4. Actor who recently played Oscar Madison and character played by Raymond Burr
Got them all.
Heading into the final: Ten teams with scores ranging from 50 to 67, with Your Resume Sucks and Ennui tied with perfect games. “Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender” was right behind them with 65 points (we think his only miss was the FB clue/Grey Poupon question, which would not have been missed had the ‘Pod helped with that question, which would have resulted in three-way tie for first). Nick apparently does not partake in any social media.
Final Category: NHL Teams
Among NHL franchises that have won the Stanley Cup, what is the only NHL franchise that has been in every playoffs, and has won the Stanley Cup twice? This is where the teamwork really happened. Heather started quietly rattling off every single NHL franchise she could think of, and we had it narrowed down to a strong possibility in Florida. Then she started rattling off teams out farther west, in the Mountain time zone, to be specific. Then Nick’s eyes lit up. And we handed in the slip and waited…
Game winners; Two teams moved up in the ranks for second and third spots (did not write them down), and Don’t Forget to Strip Your Bartender took first! Yay, Go Strip! We believe every team needs a good catchphrase…
Other questions from game two:
Within one, in what year was Dungeons & Dragons first published?
Heading into the final: Scores ranging from 35 to 61, with Ennui taking the lead again. “Strip” was in third with 53 points.
Final Category: TV Specials (groan) In December, 2015, “Adele Live in New York” was the most watched TV special in history since what singer’s farewell tour in 2003? And “Strip” didn’t need any help nailing this one, which means they got a “sweep” with their two-player “nanoteam!” This is a phrase we recently coined to represent teams consisting of 2-3 players. This is especially significant since the Corner teams tend to average on the larger side (the word “megateam” was coined by friends of ours on rival team More Beer Less Pants to describe these larger teams). We love this “David vs. Goliath” stuff! Go Strip! We plan to return to the Tilted Kilt in Canton next week and are still trying to determine where we will play regularly next season (pssst, we don’t want this off-season to end, we’ve had a blast playing in lots of different places). So sad! But we will, alas, get “down to business” to determine which place(s) will best suit us in qualifying for the regional tournament. As always, Go ‘Pods!
