Trivia Recap – Dec. 5, 2018 – Tower Inn

Did Sporcle Live use some tough tournament-caliber questions in Tuesday’s trivia games – or were we just too dumb/understaffed to answer them (don’t answer that)! The questions in game two, in particular, made us do our best dumb faces (and there we were thinking we’d do better in game two…ha ha ha ha!). When does optimism ever accomplish anything?
Still, it wasn’t ENTIRELY disastrous, as we did win two second place/$10 prizes which we can redeem on future bar tabs. Tower Inn doesn’t give you gift certificates or gift cards for prizes, they take your phone number, and the server will look up your “account” when you cash out. Most of the time, this system has worked without a hitch, there was just ONE time where one of the servers didn’t enter the information properly and our prize money didn’t show up the next time we played. But the issue was taken care of quickly by a member of management staff.

We were joined by a third player, Brad, for game two, and he was able to help us answer the game two mystery round and final question correctly (talk about good timing)!

About those questions…(answers in the comments)

Game One

1. TV Settings – The Office, The Goldbergs and Pretty Little Liars are all primarily set in what U.S. state? 10

2. ’80s Music – What 1989 Young MC song opens with this line: “This here’s a tale for all the fellas?” 9

3. Book Characters – What anthropomorphic literary character created in 1931 usually wears a green three-piece suit? Way to ignore the (blank) in the room (ahem)! Miss for 4.

4. Interviews – Whom was being interviewed when asked in 2014 (referring to a 2000 incident): “Do you regret telling that guy you were going to eat his children?” Got it, but for only 1.

5. Games – How many different bullseye ranges are there in traditional enclosed skeeball? I said, “Why don’t we go next door to the Wurst Bar to look at their skeeball machine (JK)? Unsure if they even still have that skeeball machine…missed for 2.

6. Sequels – Be Cool is the 2005 sequel starring John Travolta and Uma Thurman and is the sequel to what 1995 film? 8

7. Solar Systems – Ceres is the largest known object in orbit between which two planets – bonus point – what is Ceres the goddess of? Got for the points plus the bonus (I remembered the bonus answer from having a similar question some time ago). 7

8. Surrenders – What is the name of the courthouse where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant? I’ve been there before. It’s a pretty dull historic site, unfortunately…now if they had animatronic versions of Grant and Lee in there recreating the event in various humorous ways, THAT might be different! And this is one of many reasons why I will never be in charge of anything important (LOL)! 6
familyguyRobert_Lee_2.jpg
In Family Guy’s take on this famous surrender, the South had to give up their slaves, but wouldn’t take up reading…

9. Art – What kind of art uses names such as bear’s claw, wheel of fortune, grandma’s puzzle to describe various block formations? Close but no cigar…miss for 5. Clearly I am not “crafty” enough!

10. World Cities – Moscow, Manila and Wellington all border what ocean? 2

Mystery – All responses will be names of Periodic Table elements

M1 – Monopoly token replaced by cat in 2013
M2 – Car model made by Plymouth and Dodge from 1994 to 2005
M3 – TV network airing Bad Girls Club for 17 seasons
M4 – Planet in solar system

Got all of these.

Scores: Five teams – score ranges 14, 25, 39, 49 and 57 with us in first.

Final Category – Movie Awards

Upon hearing the category name, I said “It’s probably MTV movie awards, so don’t wager it all.”

Name two of the five films for which two men have shared the MTV Movie & TV Award for Best Kiss, three of which were released in the 2000s and two were released in the 2010s.
BUGS_KISSES_Elmer.jpg
If MTV had been around in the 1940s/1950s, Bugs Bunny would certainly be a winner of a MTV Movie Award!

Got one correct, but not both…(no teams got them both correct).

Scores: ‘Pods, 44; Lucky Ducks, 49.

Game Two (Grab a hanky, this will be a TEARJERKER!)

1. Uniforms – A keikogi is a type of uniform worn in what sport? We were a bit too specific, miss for 3.

2. World Leaders – What world leader, whom has been at the helm of their country since 2005, announced they would not seek re-election in 2021? Miss for 1.

3. 2010s Music – This was an audio clue of a holiday song certified platinum by the RIAA in 2015, 3.5 years after its release, had to give the title of the song. Since I can’t play an audio clue for people reading this, I will say the artist is Justin Bieber. Have fun! We missed for 2, though it was frustrating, since I have heard that song…a lot (not by choice)!

4. Companies – What company, originally a denim label, has since expanded to also include fragrances and accessories – was founded by Nelly, Yomi Martin and Ian Kelly in 2003 and targets women of “all shapes and sizes?” Yeah, right! I’m pretty sure “freaky tall women” are NOT among the people they include in “all shapes and sizes!” Ask me about my recent Quixotic quest to find work pants that fit (after three tries, three months, it finally happened…). Now that I’m done with this little fashion rant (ahem), I did not write this question down word for word, but this is the gist of it…miss for 4. Will we get ANY questions correct in this round? Yes! Read on!

5. Comedy – Fire Marshall Bill and East Hollywood Squares were sketch subjects on what comedy series debuting in 1990? This show wouldn’t fly with the PC Police now, but damnnn, it was funny back in the day! 10

6. Wine – A wine is “printed” when what occurs? A: The grapes are planted, B: The grapes are harvested, C: The wine is barreled or D: The wine is bottled. The two representative players in this game were both WAY too low-brow to know about anything about wine! But those $2.50 pints of Dark Horse’s High Five Harvest Ale on special were pretty tasty! Miss for 5.

7. U.S. States – Other than Texas, Alaska and California, what is the next largest U.S. state by total area to border the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico? Bonus – what is the least populous U.S. state to border any of these bodies of water? Miss and miss. Usually we’re good with this category. Maybe we hit critical mass on the IPAs? Miss for 6.

8. Poe – What Edgar Allen Poe story involves the main character being brought before judges in the Spanish Inquisition (among other events)? Mike nailed this for 9, the only Poe story I know more than a couple of things about is the one where that drunken guy gets encased in a wall by a guy who didn’t like him very much (duh). That one is The Cask of Amontillado.

9. Protests – Far right political protester Laura Loomer handcuffed herself to the headquarters of what company for two hours in November, 2018? Miss for 7. Epic “current events” fail!

10. Voices – What actor provides the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story films? 8

This is when Brad showed up…just in time to help with this…
visual124d.jpeg

Got all of these.

Scores: Six teams – We were in fourth with 35 points, top score was 54 points.

Final Category – Washington D.C.

There are five permanent structures in Washington, D.C. that are taller than the United States Capitol, including the Hughes Memorial Tower and the Washington Monument. Name one of the other three buildings, all of which are at least 300 feet tall.

Wagered 20, got this…

Unsure who finished first, but we finished in second with 55 points.

Until next time, which will be Thursday at our MTL spot – JB’s Smokehouse in Canton. Next recap will be Friday. As always, Go Pods, and stay classy, Ferdinand Magellen! And here is one of my absolute favorite images of Ferdinand Magellan…

Animaniacs is GREAT trivia fodder! They did a great job of summarizing Magellan’s seafaring exploits, which you can watch here.
