Although there was some confusion at first…it looks like (drum roll) the Miskatonic University Fighting Cephalopods will be going to the Sporcle Live Pub Champions League Championship Saturday, Dec. 1 at Ashley’s in Westland!
I was very, very confused when I saw the league standings for Tower Inn showing that we’d qualified for the venue tournament by playing just three games. The Tower Inn host, Kat, messaged me Friday afternoon and said that though we’d qualified we weren’t “locked” into our spot and would have to pick another venue tournament in which to play since we were the only qualified team at Tower Inn.
We WERE going to play at Oscar’s…I had myself, Mike, Dave and Evan lined up to play, and I sent off the message to Sporcle Live.
Well, Sporcle Live got back to me today:
Hi Heather,
Because you are the only qualified team at Tower Inn, you are automatically qualified for the League Championships. There’s no need to participate in another Venue Tournament. Please be sure to RSVP here to secure your spot.

Sporcle brass told me that a “new” venue has to have at – the bare minimum – four games to qualify for a venue tournament. And normal rules apply – you play at least half of those games, and the “qualified” teams at the VT fight for a spot. Only this time…we’re the only team in contention. Well then! This is different…
This doesn’t mean our team will be taking this week off! Oh NO! We plan to play Tuesday at Tower Inn (we have some prize money to use), and will also play Thursday at Original Gravity (though I will only have two players for the OG game). This will be the sixth venue tournament I’ve played at OG (in only two of those was I trying “in earnest” to win a tournament spot). Next week is Thanksgiving week, which means Hell Week for me at work in Retailville…unsure about any trivial pursuits next week (Tuesday may be the only night that works…).
As always, I don’t have the highest expectations for how our team will do at finals. We’re not one of “those” teams that tends to win tournament money a lot. But it will be good to just be there! My team is very, very excited (especially Evan…such youthful enthusiasm, LOL). I don’t in the slightest feel like we didn’t “earn” the spot! We may not have played 13 times in the same spot week after week this past season – but we DID play 17 different Sporcle Live games this past season. And we’ve been more than dutiful workhorses over the the past nearly seven years in our attempts to qualify for various tournaments. So if anyone wants to say we are getting a “free ride” to this tournament? Uh, no – I don’t think so!
